Jamie Lee Curtis has been writing letters to Disney about the possibility of a Freaky Friday 2. In 1976, Disney took the rather obscure children’s novel Freaky Friday by Mary Rodgers and adapted it into a comedy feature film starring Jodie Foster and Barbara Harris. The film immediately became a classic and was even nominated for three Golden Globes. The plot centers around a woman and her teenage daughter who do not see eye to eye and view the other as having a better life. As the title suggests, the two of them end up switching bodies on Friday the 13th and must literally walk in each other’s shoes in order to better understand the other.
While written as a one-off, Freaky Friday continued to be one of Disney’s recognizable IPs. In 1995, a TV movie remake was produced, followed by a 2003 theatrical remake starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan. In 2018, a Disney Channel Original Movie remake was produced that was based on the 2016 musical production. Despite this, the 2003 version is considered the most memorable of them all due to the performances of the two leads. Curtis has praised Freaky Friday and has openly expressed interest in producing a continuation to the film with Lohan.
While speaking on The View, Curtis goes into extra detail about wanting to reprise her role of Tess, (and Anna) Coleman alongside Lohan. The soon-to-be 64-year-old humorously brings up her hope for wanting to return to the role, having built a good relationship with Disney while working on the upcoming Haunted Mansion remake as Madame Leota, by bluntly stating that she is open to anything creatively. Curtis admits:
I’ve already written to Disney, my friends at Disney… creatively I am wide open… Let me be the grandma, let me be the old grandma who switches places… so then Lindsay gets to be the sexy grandma who’s still happy with Mark Harmon in all the ways you would be happy with Mark Harmon… I would like to see Lindsay be the hot grandma, and I would like to see me try to deal with toddlers today. I want to be a helicopter parent in today’s world.
Jamie Lee Curtis’ Enthusiasm Is Good News For Freaky Friday 2
Curtis became a breakout star with the horror film Halloween, which cemented her as the Scream Queen. Over time, she started to venture off into doing other film projects and genres, cementing herself as an iconic actor in her own right. Curtis has continued to express interest in doing smaller projects, and her enthusiasm for making Freaky Friday 2 shows her commitment to the film. The fact that she is openly discussing the idea of a sequel and has nudged Disney about it demonstrates her seriousness in creating Freaky Friday 2. It also suggests that such a thing could actually happen; if Curtis gets Lohan on board, Disney might be persuaded to greenlight the project.
