James Gunn Teases More Suicide Squad Spinoff Show Developments

In a recent Instagram Q&A, The Suicide Squad director James Gunn has hinted that more potential spinoffs may be in the works. Gunn, who is well known for his impromptu Q&A sessions via social media, has often provided fans with interesting titbits about his projects whenever he has a few spare moments. Not too long ago Gunn also revealed that John Cena would not be getting a new costume for his Peacemaker spinoff via a similar Q&A that he conducted via Twitter.

Cena’s Peacemaker series, which Gunn penned during last year’s pandemic lock-down “mostly for fun”, recently wrapped filming and is slated for release on HBO Max on January 16, 2022. The first series to officially be set within the DCEU, Warner Bros. are currently looking to expand their superhero footprint onto the HBO Max streaming platform with a range of future DC films and series. Following on from Peacemaker, HBO Max will also be releasing their upcoming Gotham PD series set in the same universe at Matt Reeve’s The Batman, at some point in 2022 after the film’s release.

Now in another of Gunn’s trademark Q&A’s, the director was asked whether there were “any developments on other TSS [The Suicide Squad] spin-off shows?”. Intent on not revealing too much, yet not shooting down the idea either, Gunn replied “Maaaaaaaaybe”. With a massive ensemble cast filled with some of the most obscure and eclectic villains in DC comic lore, there is certainly a lot of options for future spin-offs should Gunn choose to pursue them. Of course, with the marketing for The Suicide Squad literally warning audiences to not “get too attached” to the characters, those options may likely decrease substantially once the film is released. With The Suicide Squad’s death count expected to be pretty high, there will probably be far fewer living members of Task Force X left who will actually be able to move on to future adventures. After all, they’re called the Suicide Squad for a reason.

Of course, just like HBO Max’s Gotham P.D. series, Gunn could also potentially look at creating a prequel series which could also potentially lead up to the events of The Suicide Squad. Regardless of its time setting though, one other issue Gunn may have to overcome is his increasingly busy schedule, as he is soon due to head back over to Marvel Studios to finish up Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. In the meantime, Gunn’s fans still have plenty in store for them with both The Suicide Squad and the Peacemaker series sure to provide them more than their fair share of DC treats.
