James Cameron Announces 4 New Avatar Movies Starting in 2018

It’s been a long time since James Cameron hit up CinemaCon in Las Vegas, but in 2016 he stopped by to give the movie theater owners attending the event a major Avatar update. He even joked, “I haven’t been here since the show was called Showest.” But boy he did not disappoint. He hit up the 20th Century Fox presentation to share breaking news. Cue drum roll please. There are 4 new Avatar films in the works and approved for production by Fox, Cameron announced.

Avatar 2 is slated for release in 2018, with the following releases slated for 2020, 2022 and finally in 2023. Cameron explain he was working hard with his team of four screenwriters to design the world of Pandora when they all realized that there was just “too much story” and “too much visuals for one film.” He further added that all four films will be stand alone films, but act as a complete saga, saying these Avatar sequels are “true sagas” and a “massive cinematic project.” He also teased the audience by saying, “So far what I am seeing on the wall, in terms of imagery, is way beyond the first film.”

Cameron explained that his team has been hard at work on Avatar. Though the process has been an arduous on,e his team has been trying to find new ways to keep the franchise fresh in people’s minds – whether that be a Pandora themed park ride at Disney World opening in 2017 or a partnership with Cirque du Soleil for an Avatar themed show. Cameron also mentioned his team is partnering with Darkhorse for a series of dark novels/ comic based on the franchise.

He closed out the presentation with artwork stills from the Avatar movie universe. You can check out the official logo for the Avatar sequels, below:
