Station 19 showrunner and executive producer Peter Paige has explained Jack’s tragic fate in the season 7 premiere, acknowledging just how much pain the character has gone through. The first episode of the final season revealed the firefighter would be able to make a recovery from his latest injuries. However, it was revealed that he will not be able to work as a firefighter anymore.

Speaking with TVLine, Paige broken down the tragic news about Jack’s career in Station 19 season 7. The showrunner acknowledged the level of pain Jack has been through in the series, revealing why his storyline is set to end this way. Check out what Paige had to say below:

It was really important to me that we explore what it is to let go of a dream, and there is something about Jack Gibson, about his openness and vulnerability, that makes him a really compelling vehicle to explore [that with].

We have beaten the s*** out of the poor man, literally physically, and at a certain point you just have to acknowledge that that’s going to have a price.

Why Jack’s New Station 19 Storyline Is Going To Be Tragic

At the end of Station 19 season 6, Jack collapsed, leaving a cliffhanger for what his fate was going to be in the final season. Despite getting surgery that saved his life – and him waking up ready to keep working – it appears his days as a firefighter are now over. Given how dedicated he was to his job, this fact will undoubtedly change him forever as the rest of the season plays out.

Paige’s explanation highlights just how much Jack has been through, both in his past and throughout the events of the show. Despite having a tough upbringing in foster care and a string of difficult relationships throughout the series, he has always maintained his energy as an important member of the team. However, his positivity is likely to decrease when it becomes clear he can no longer be a firefighter.

Even though his path going forward is going to be more difficult than ever before, the tragic development in Jack’s life doesn’t need to define who he is forever. Since it seems like it will be a major focus of the final season, though, the new life he has to adjust to will no doubt be a major part of how the series moves forward. With nine episodes left, Station 19 has already proven with his fate how close the series is to being over.
