Magic: The Gathering is releasing a new set of cards based on the fantasy world of The Lord of the Rings, and recently gave excited fans a sneak peek at the artwork of some of the cards featuring beloved LOTR characters, including Elijah Wood’s own character, Frodo Baggins. The set, The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth brings familiar characters from the stories of J.R.R. Tolkien and lets players take them on a whole new adventure through the tabletop experience. It will focus on important events that have happened during the Third Age which have shaped Middle-earth and features key locations that fans of Lord of the Rings will recognize.

In the thread of tweets from Magic: The Gathering on May 30, 2023, Elijah Wood was recorded in a short clip showing his response to some of the cards and his thoughts about them. Wood, who played Frodo Baggins in Peter Jackson’s three Lord of the Rings films, expressed enthusiasm at seeing Tolkien’s beloved characters re-imagined for the upcoming MTG set.

As Wood states in the video, “Any time you get to see these characters realized in a new and fresh way is always really exciting.” The actor’s cheerful response at being shown the cards is evident throughout the video as he shows a few of the cards that he is excited to discover, in particular the One Ring.

The cross-over set of Lord of the Rings MTG cards is currently set to include 281 regular cards with some premium versions randomly placed in the packs. The illustrations on the cards will depict the various locations of Middle-earth, the familiar characters from the series, and more, and are being artfully crafted by several talented artists. The set will not have any Planeswalker cards, due to the card type simply not fitting with the traditional Lord of the Rings environment.

Though Elijah Wood has not said if he plays the game, his eagerness at seeing the cards is infectious and appeared truly genuine. The Magic: The Gathering cross-over set looks beautiful and is already highly anticipated by many in both fandoms.
