“It’s Tough To Articulate”: Letterkenny Cast Emotionally React To Show Ending After 14 Seasons

With the long-running show now at a close, some of the Letterkenny cast are sharing their emotional reactions to its ending. The Canadian comedy revolving around the population of the eponymous small town came to an end with the recently released season 12, which saw lead characters Wayne, Daryl, Dan and Katy all pondering their futures, including potentially leaving the town. The final season also comes on the heels of creator/star Jared Keeso inking a major deal with Hulu for future shows, including potential Letterkenny spinoffs.

While speaking with Screen Rant for Letterkenny season 12, Michelle Mylett, Dylan Playfair, Andrew Herr and Tyler Johnston opened up about their feelings for the show ending. The stars all expressed sadness that the long-running comedy was closing, reflecting on the lifelong friendships they made during its filming and finding themselves still processing what life would be like without the show. Check out what they shared below:

Michelle Mylett: I mean, bittersweet is the perfect way to describe it. Mostly sweet. It’s been a lot to process. I mean, obviously, we shot the season a year ago, and so we’ve had more time to process, but watching the final season and announcing it to everybody else, it almost re-brought up everything. I feel sad, obviously, I’m gonna miss it so much. I feel so proud at the same time of what we did, and also the connection we made with each other, and I feel just really thankful for everything.

Dylan Playfair: Yeah, do you ever watch Just for Laughs? You know at the very end when the little green monster comes out and cries, “Mommy, it’s over!”? I’ve kind of felt like that green monster for the last year, because the show is so fun and brought so much joy to so many people. There’s no other feeling than pride, you know, proud of what we did, and proud of the way it affects the world. And to hear people’s stories of how our silly show has helped them through things, I could fill a long, long notebook with stories of folks that have watched this show and had it help them through times that I can’t fathom.

So, that has me holding my head very, very high. But also, the little kid in me is super sad that school’s out, and we’re not going back. But maybe one day, who knows, as the story ended with some very open, I think, storylines not fully tied up in a bow. Perhaps there’s an opportunity for spinoffs, movies, reunions, who knows? But I love these people, and I would come back for more yesterday if the opportunity presented itself.

Andrew Herr: It’s tough to articulate, I think, right now. But I do find myself just looking back on [things and] obviously very appreciative of the fans supporting your show, but selfishly — maybe selfish isn’t the right word — just looking back at all the great times we had together as a cast, and just feeling very grateful that I met some of my best friends, Tyler being one of them. Sorry, the other Tyler, not Tyler Tyler. [Chuckles] But yeah, I just feel very grateful, and it kind of makes you feel emotional inside about all the good times we had together, and I think this season ended with a bang.

Tyler Johnston: Absolutely, I’m the same way. I’m extremely proud of this show we put out into the world. We worked hard, we had a lot of fun, I think we managed to have a lot of fun during the making of it. I don’t think we took it for granted, and it’s going to be an adjustment period for sure, moving forward. This has been a big part of our lives, nine years, and I know we’re only a few days past our final release here, so we’re still doing some processing. Like Andrew said, we all got emotions that we’re kind of working through, and probably will continue to do so for a while, but the amazing feedback from the fans over the last couple of days has certainly felt phenomenal.

How Letterkenny Became A Cultural Landmark

Having first made its way to American audiences on Hulu in 2018, Letterkenny came during a wave of Canadian comedies rising to prominence with international viewers. The Simu Liu-starring Kim’s Convenience similarly began trending in the US upon its premiere on Netflix, with the actor’s breakout turn in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings turning further attention to the show for audiences curious to learn more about him. The Dan and Eugene Levy-created Schitt’s Creek also garnered steady viewership after its Netflix debut, even leading to 19 Primetime Emmy nominations and nine wins, including Outstanding Comedy Series.

Unlike some of its Canadian counterparts, Letterkenny has been one of the few shows to get a spinoff in the form of Shoresy, once again created, written by and starring Keeso as the titular foul-mouthed hockey player, with mothership show co-creator and director Jacob Tierney also directing. While Kim’s Convenience did get a spinoff revolving around Nicole Power’s Shannon, it ultimately failed to reach the same success as its source show, only lasting for two seasons before being cancelled. Shoresy, on the other hand, was renewed for season 3 before season 2 even premiered, confirming Hulu’s confidence in its future.

With some of the show’s cast also recently popping up in major American productions, including Nathan Dales in Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City and Dylan Playfair in The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, it’s hard to deny the cultural impact Letterkenny has established during its 12-season run. Though its unclear which characters could be the center of future spinoffs following Keeso’s groundbreaking Hulu deal, the group’s intense passion for the show and wide range of storylines left open after the series finale should keep fans of the show hopeful for some of their favorite faces to return at some point in the future.
