It’s Time To Face Facts: The Bad Batch Isn’t Bringing Tech Back

Warning! This article contains spoilers for Star Wars: The Bad Batch season 3.

Star Wars: The Bad Batch season 3 was subject to theories that Tech would come back, though it seems increasingly unlikely this will transpire. Since the first trailer for The Bad Batch season 3, many held onto hopes that the upcoming Star Wars TV show would see the return of Tech. Tech’s death was the tragic culmination of The Bad Batch season 2, one that left fans across the world heartbroken after his heroic sacrifice.

Since then, Star Wars’ Project Necromancer has taken center stage in The Bad Batch season 3, moving the focus away from Tech and his absence in the show. That said, this has not stopped many from attempting to spot clues that Tech is still alive in The Bad Batch, despite it looking ever more likely that he fell to his death on Eriadu. With Star Wars: The Bad Batch season 3 inching closer to its finale, it seems that Star Wars fans will have to face the sad fact that Tech will not be revived after his sacrifice with Plan 99.

The Bad Batch Fans Have Been Hoping For A Winter Soldier Twist

The new villain of The Bad Batch season 3 has long been theorized to be a revived Tech.

Firstly, it is worth exploring the basis of theories surrounding Tech’s potential revival in Star Wars: The Bad Batch season 3. The first whispers of Tech’s death being walked back came after the release of The Bad Batch season 3’s trailer. In this trailer, the first glimpse at CX-2d was shown. CX-2 is the villainous clone operative working for Dr. Hemlock, dedicated to tracking down the titular Bad Batch and capturing Omega so that the Empire can continue using her for Project Necromancer.

Since Tech fell to his supposed death on Eriadu, many clung to the hope that a long-standing TV trope could mean his survival; if a character is not explicitly confirmed to be dead and a dead body is not shown, the character in question could come back. This trope was applied to Tech, with many theorizing he could have survived the fall and been captured by the Empire. This spiraled into the theories that Tech was turned into a brainwashed clone and that the secret identity of CX-2 is none other than the fallen brother of Clone Force 99.

Tech (Clone Force 99)

A mutant clone created by the cloners of Kamino, Tech was a scientific genius who served as a vital member of Clone Force 99. He and the rest of his squad went rogue after Order 66 and the inauguration of the Empire, and eked out a living in the galaxy’s underworld. Tech tragically died on one fateful mission, sacrificing himself for his brothers.

There Aren’t Enough Bad Batch Episodes Left For This To Work

The Winter Soldier theory held merit, though has been left too late to explore with any real impact.

As far as theories about characters in Star Wars surviving go, the idea that Tech is CX-2 held some credence. However, if it were to still transpire in Star Wars: The Bad Batch season 3’s remaining episodes, it would simply not have the emotional impact it needs. If the theory that CX-2 was Tech were to be emotionally resonant, it needed to be addressed much earlier in the season. As of the ending of The Bad Batch season 3, episode 13, there is not enough time left for this reveal to be explored as fully as needed.

Who Is The Bad Batch’s CX-2? Fans Spot A Massive Clue In The Latest Episode

The latest episode of Star Wars: The Bad Batch includes a clue that hints at the true identity of the clone assassin CX-2, and fans have found it.

If, for instance, Tech was revealed as CX-2, The Bad Batch would need to explore a lot for the reveal to hit emotionally. From the impact this would have on characters like Omega, Hunter, and Wrecker to the potential reformation of Tech as a member of Clone Force 99, this theory coming true would escalate into several other plot points. Each of these plot points would need at least five episodes for the revelations to feel warranted. However, Star Wars: The Bad Batch season 3 only has two episodes remaining, both of which seem intent on focusing on Omega’s liberation.

Tech Really Did Die In The Bad Batch Season 2 Finale After All

The time left for The Bad Batch season 3 proves Tech’s sacrifice was ultimately his end after all.

Tech holds up his blaster and prepares to execute Plan 99 on Eriadu

With these time limitations in mind, it becomes clear that Tech’s sacrifice in The Bad Batch season 2’s ending was final. There simply is not enough time left for the show to reverse such a major plot point with any sense of worth, meaning audiences will sadly have to accept Tech’s demise was irreversible. Despite this raising the reality that Tech is gone for good, the fact that Tech’s sacrifice is left untarnished is undoubtedly a good call from the writers of Star Wars: The Bad Batch.

The primary reason for this is that Tech returning would have robbed The Bad Batch season 2’s finale of its emotional resonance. Tech’s death is one of the most tragic sacrifices in all of Star Wars, something that would be reversed had it been revealed Tech survived. If Star Wars: The Bad Batch season 3 does not bring Tech back as expected, the sacrifice of the character remains emotionally affecting, important to the show’s story, and, perhaps most importantly, solidifies Tech as a true hero of the Star Wars galaxy.
