It’s Always Sunny: “Charlie Rules The World” Sees The Gang Go Virtual

It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia’s “Charlie Rules The World” finds the game getting into online gaming – with predictably dire results for all involved. It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia follows Dennis, his twin sister Dee, their “father” Frank, Charlie and Mac, who run Paddy’s Pub. They don’t spend much time tending bar, however, with the show revolving around their depraved antics or schemes that almost always backfire. When the show began back in 2005, the dark humor of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia was in stark contrast to most colorful sitcoms of its era like How I Met Your Mother.

It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia had no issue leaning into the awfulness of its main characters, and it’s popularity only grew over time. The showrunners are no doubt surprised it’s run for fourteen seasons to date, making it one of the longest-running live-action sitcoms ever. Another series has yet to be confirmed, though it feels like a given at least one more season will press ahead. Fans should probably never expect a proper finale episode, however, since creator Rob McElhenney – who plays Ronald “Mac” McDonald – doesn’t believe audiences really want “definitive” endings.

It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia season 8 episode “Charlie Rules The World” finds Charlie being treated poorly by the gang and hired by Dee – for a princely $5 – to look after her online game while she goes shopping. The game in question is TechPocalypse, a post-apocalyptic RPG. While Dee is gone Charlie greatly upgrades her avatar and he soon takes over her profile. Frank and Mac soon get sucked into the game once they find Dee made mocking avatars of them too, while Dennis refuses to take part since the game has nothing to do with the real world.

It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia “Charlie Rules The World” finds Charlie feeling imbued with a sense of power, to the point he tricks another player on a date only to distract her long enough for his game tribe to destroy hers. Mac makes a super muscley avatar of himself who picks fights but is constantly defeated, while Frank makes a disturbingly buxom version of himself who sleeps around for in-game fish. They also show Dennis one of his sex tapes – which involves hair cutting and Lionel Richie’s “All Night Long” – to convince him of the merits of the game, which still doesn’t work.

It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia “Charlie Rules The World” later finds Dennis having an epiphany in a sensory deprivation tank while talking to a British version of himself. The gang’s obsession with TechPocalypse comes to an abrupt end when Dennis – acting as a God – deleted their profiles, and declares that sometimes things just end. The credits than cut to a giant turtle floating in space, a reference to an earlier gag that they could all just be a space turtle’s dream; it’s no doubt a nod to the cosmic turtles featuring in the likes of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower series.
