“It Was Actually Like 112 Degrees”: Melissa McCarthy Recalls Gilmore Girls Cast Member Passing Out

A Gilmore Girls cast member reportedly collapsed on set one day, according to Melissa McCarthy. A comedy series that ran from 2000 to 2007 and enjoyed a short-lived revival in 2016, Gilmore Girls followed two women coping with their family history and day-to-day lives in Stars Hollow, Connecticut. While the setting often made life on the set seem cool and comfortable, real-world temperatures weren’t exactly easy to bear.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, McCarthy revealed that the heat eventually caused someone to collapse. While filming was actually taking place in warm California, cast members still wore coats and had to stay in them, even when shooting promotional material. The hot weather proved to be too much for one unnamed cast member, causing them to pass out. Presumably, the actor who endured the incident recovered well, or McCarthy likely would not be sharing it as a funny anecdote. Check out her quote below:

“Sometimes we were like crammed into small things with coats on but it was actually like 112 degrees in Burbank. When we did our first poster, someone passed out. Like just out cold because we were all in coats and trying to look blustery.”

Will Gilmore Girls Ever Return?

Considering that the poster was meant to be for season 1 of Gilmore Girls, it’s lucky that such a bad omen didn’t actually bleed out onto the show. Gilmore Girls became a flagship show for the WB and a cultural icon. It even enjoyed a revival in the controversial Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, which was intended to tie up the loose ends in the show.

There always remains the question of whether Gilmore Girls is truly over. After all, popular series rarely come to a final conclusion and can regularly be gifted prequels, sequels, or spinoff series. There have been two planned Gilmore Girls spinoffs that never came to be. One would have followed Rory after the series, while the other would have centered around Jess Mariano (Milo Ventimiglia).

Filming costs and a harrowing production timeline prevented both shows from coming to fruition, making it less likely that Gilmore Girls can ever truly return. Production schedules and costs would have only grown more complicated over the years, after all. Thankfully, since Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life did receive largely positive responses, even in light of the controversies and questions it raised, there is still always a chance for Gilmore Girls to earn a follow-up.
