“It Leaves That Open”: The Tourist Season 2 Ending Addressed By Jamie Dornan

The article contains spoilers for The Tourist season 2 finale, “Episode 6.”

The cliffhanger ending of The Tourist season 2 is addressed by star and executive producer Jamie Dornan. In the six-episode season 2 of the crime drama created by Harry and Jack Williams, Elliot Stanley (Dornan) and his girlfriend Helen Chambers (Danielle Macdonald) take a trip to Ireland to meet Elliot’s family. But their journey turns out to be a lot more than they bargained for, with kidnappings and the realization that Elliot’s identity might not be what they thought it was. He’s actually named Eugene Cassidy, and that’s not the only surprise.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Dornan reacted to the surprising cliffhanger ending for The Tourist season 2, which seems to reveal that Eugene is actually a secret agent. He praised the creators for the cleverness of how the closing moments unfolded. Dornan also underlined that the finale was very intentionally left open-ended. He also talked about how the story was planned to run for one season and how that changed because of the show’s popularity. Read his full comment below:

“It was just a f—ing very Jack and Harry mad thing to throw in there. My reaction was probably like, of course you’ve done that, of course that’s what he f—ing did. It’s just so mad, unexpected, and just a bit bonkers, but very them, and very in keeping with the quirkiness of the show. There was probably a little bit of an emphasis on keeping that open-ended and letting the audience into that. [It] leaves that open for whatever they want to do next.”

“The idea was always just to do one series. It was pitched as a limited series of six episodes and I was very on board with that. That felt like the right thing in that mad peak COVID time of it all, to go and do this clean, cool, punchy, odd drama that will live by itself. And then, ah Jesus, a lot of people watched it in the U.K. and Ireland and it got a lot of love, there was a lot of good energy around it.”

“There’s probably a world where it happens in Holland in some capacity, if they were to do more, which wouldn’t be a bad thing,” he says. “I like the Dutch, they’re an interesting bunch, and always really fun, and it’s a beautiful place. But who knows!”

The Tourist Season 2 Ending Explained

For a time, it seemed that the crime drama would offer an ultimately conclusive resolution. In contrast to The Tourist season 1’s ending, in which Helen saves Dornan’s character from ending his life, the couple are in a good place during the last moments of season 2. The long-standing family feud between the Cassidys and the McDonnells takes a turn when Helen shares how she uncovered love letters between the mother of Nimah Cassidy (Olwen Fouéré) and the father of Frank McDonnell (Francis Magee). This means that Eugene’s mother, Nimah, and Eugene’s rival, Frank, are half-siblings. Nimah tries to shoot Helen for bringing this fact to light, but Eugene stops her.

Where Was The Tourist Filmed? Jamie Dornan Thriller’s Filming Locations Explained

When it comes to filming locations, Jamie Dornan’s critically acclaimed thriller The Tourist excels by shooting its many twists and turns on location.

The potential bloodshed is temporarily put to rest with Nimah storming off. She leaves Helen and Eugene to reconcile in a pub after briefly breaking up. After a time jump, audiences catches up with Helen and Eugene, who are happily living in Amsterdam, just before the finale uncovers its big twist. Eugene received a file with information about his old life. Both he and Helen decide not to open the file, suggesting that they’ve accepted that Eugene’s past doesn’t represent the person he is today. The Tourist’s leading character eventually tosses the file into the fireplace.

The finale, written by the co-creators and directed by Kate Dolan, bids farewell as Helen watches her boyfriend rediscover his old ballet talent. But the scene of Eugene dancing is contrasted with the secret file slowly burning away. In the file, for a few moments, it’s shown that Eugene is referred to as a secret agent. Even though Dornan gave a mixed update on The Tourist season 3, the cliffhanger clearly sets up a third chapter.
