In June 2020, Universal Pictures announced a remake of the 1996 disaster film Twister. However, Twisters, which is set to be released in theaters on July 19, 2024, has amended that original plan.
With production on the film being delayed due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, Twisters is finally ready to give soon-to-be viewers a tease. During Super Bowl LVIII, the film’s first trailer dropped, prompting fans of the original movie to wonder about Twisters‘ connection to the ’90s classic.
Twisters Is A Standalone Sequel To The 1996 Original
Despite Universal Pictures’ previous plan, Twisters is not a remake or a reboot of the 1996 Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton film. Instead, Twisters is a standalone sequel, which means seasoned vets and newcomers alike can enjoy the film.
Starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell, Twisters follows a new generation of storm chasers. Much like the 1996 movie, the standalone sequel also boasts an impressive supporting cast, which includes Kiernan Shipka, Sasha Lane, and Anthony Ramos, among others.
Twisters Won’t Rely On Original Movie Connections (But There Will Be Callbacks)
While Lee Isaac Chung’s movie won’t require viewers to have seen Twister, the standalone sequel will feature plenty of callbacks to the ’90s classic. From the movie’s tech to the twin tornadoes thread to the possibility that Edgar-Jones’ character is Bill and Jo’s daughter, Twisters will feature plenty for series fans to be excited about.
