After the stellar reception of her first few performances in cult classics like The Parent Trap, Mean Girls, and Freaky Friday, Lohan starred in a string of critical and commercial flops such as I Know Who Killed Me and Chapter 27 while simultaneously suffering some highly publicized personal struggles.
A 2022 deal with Netflix is intended to mark Lindsay Lohan’s comeback, with the Yuletide rom-com Falling for Christmas being her first major production role in over a decade —since 2010’s Machete. In 2013, American Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis scripted director Paul Schrader’s dark erotic thriller The Canyons, a sleazy Neo-noir that looked like it could be Lohan’s comeback. However, The Canyons was a critical disaster and a financial flop. Lohan’s best movie appearance in the last decade was 2019’s werewolf thriller Among the Shadows, but it made almost no impact upon its release, garnering few reviews in mainstream publications — the few write-ups Among the Shadows did receive, though, were largely negative.
What’s Next For Lindsay Lohan After Falling For Christmas
Now that Falling for Christmas, which Lindsay Lohan also executive produced, has proven a success, her next Netflix movie is on solid footing. It is not yet clear whether 2023’s Irish Wish will be part of the Netflix Christmas movie cinematic universe, although its synopsis shared a few tropes in common with 2021’s Scotland-set A Castle For Christmas. Irish Luck wrapped filming in the picturesque Irish tourist town of Westport earlier this year and is slated for release in 2023. However, Irish Wish will not be the last time that Netflix viewers see Lohan on screens.
In March 2022, shortly after signing on for Falling for Christmas, Lohan secured a two-movie deal with the streaming service. Since Falling for Christmas and Irish Wish are both goofy, self-aware rom-coms, the odds are good that Lohan’s third Netflix movie will also fit this description. Given the impressive reception of earlier Netflix holiday rom-coms such as Love Hard and Lohan’s historic success in the comedy genre, this approach is likely to keep her impressive comeback on track as viewers and reviewers alike get reacquainted with the star. Regardless of how these later releases are received, however, Falling for Christmas’s reception has already proven that critics were overly hasty in writing off Lohan’s future potential.
