Is Elden Ring Coming To PS5 Or PlayStation 4 (Or Both?)

Is Elden Ring Coming To PS5 Or PlayStation 4 (Or Both?)

After being announced over a year ago at E3 2019, developer FromSoftware hasn’t given any updates regarding their upcoming title, Elden Ring. The game has stirred up quite a bit of interest since its initial announcement trailer, considering Elden Ring is a collaboration between Dark Souls creator Hidetaka Miyazaki and Game of Thrones author George R. R. Martin. Originally planned for a release on PS4, PC, and Xbox One, the fate of Elden Ring is currently unknown, and it’s possible the project may even be delayed.

Development delays are normal, especially lately when entire projects have had to go on hold due to COVID-19 fears. But even before a worldwide pandemic, FromSoftware and publisher Bandai Namco shared very little details regarding Elden Ring. The game was once rumored for a June 2020 release, but the month came and went without even a hint of new details — let alone the game itself. More Elden Ring rumors surfaced for a Holiday 2020 release, but that also seems increasingly unlikely as the year’s end grows closer. So, what does this all mean for Elden Ring‘s fate on this current generation of consoles?

Fans are growing impatient, with message boards criticizing the lack of news and some fans creating their own Elden Ring bosses and locations for the game. Because of the famous names attached to the project, Elden Ring will probably still sell well — even if it’s only released on current-gen systems. Still, it’s difficult to imagine FromSoftware and Bandai Namco doing this. It would be a risky move financially for both companies, since a lot of gamers will turn their attention to next-gen consoles like the PS5 as the holidays approach. Leaving Elden Ring off the PS5 and Xbox Series X would be a major mistake and could be detrimental to the game’s success.

Elden Ring Could Look Ahead to Next-Gen Consoles

If Elden Ring isn’t released until 2021 or later, which seems likely, it could mean the game will arrive on next-gen consoles instead. It won’t be the first time a game has changed release platforms from current-gen consoles in favor of moving to the newer systems that lie ahead. A recent example of this is the Pokémon-inspired Temtem, which was cancelled for PS4 and Xbox One to focus on next-gen development. Although expectant fans may be angered by the move, cancelling Elden Ring on PS4 and moving it to the PS5 isn’t that far-fetched.

It makes the most sense to have Elden Ring release on both the PS4 and PS5, along with the Xbox One and Series X. It’s a great way to appease fans, and it makes the most sense from a financial standpoint. With possibilities of a new trailer (and new details) hopefully arriving at upcoming events like The Game Awards, everyone should hopefully know more about Elden Ring‘s release date soon.
