Iron Man’s storyline in Avengers: Endgame added a lot more depth to an Iron Man detail that many people didn’t notice. In Tony Stark’s final appearance, there were many opportunities to show the character development Tony went through over the course of ten years. Whether his strength as a hero, his position as an entrepreneur, or his attitude toward his family, Tony has shown much growth over his MCU appearances, and his house in Endgame reveals a lot about him and how far he’s come.

In Avengers: Endgame, five years after the blip, Tony lives with Pepper and their daughter in a big lake house. His life has changed completely from how it was in the first Iron Man film. He went from being a partying businessman to being a responsible husband and father who values his family above all. In the Iron Man documentary, production designer J. Michael Riva says he wanted Tony’s home to reflect who he really is as a person. “We had decided on this kind of angular, flat, metallic, hard-edged look,” Riva says, but they ended up changing it because of how Robert Downey Jr. plays the role of Tony Stark. “He comes with a certain vulnerability to him,” says Riva. Downey Jr’s vulnerability made the production design team adapt the design of Tony’s house to feel more personal and homely. “We redesigned the notion of the house after casting him. I thought he would be more suitable in something that architecturally mirrored who he was,” Riva said. This makes design of his cabin in Avengers: Endgame after the snap all the more meaningful.

How Iron Man’s Endgame House Shows His Character Arc

Instead of the big, modern houses, Tony lived in before, he now lives in a cozy wooden cabin. Instead of steel and glass, his house has dark colors and is full of drawings and photos of his family and friends. Showing Tony’s house with toys in the yard and his daughter’s drawings lying around provides a stark contrast to Tony’s lifestyle in the earlier Iron Man films. Dark, comforting brown wood replaces the cold interior of his previous homes. Tony now lives far out in the woods by a lake, as opposed to basically living in his own workplace. This still fits Riva’s comments about designing Tony’s home to fit who he is as a character, changing the living space to reflect the changing Tony.

Even when Tony Stark wasn’t a family man yet, Robert Downey Jr brought something to Iron Man that made Riva adapt his choices for Tony’s home, which became even more important as Tony’s character arc came to an end. Tony’s lake cabin in Avengers: Endgame reflects who he is at this point in the story, and shows the character growth he’s had over the years. The tech inside Tony’s lake house makes it still feel like it’s his and retains his character. It doesn’t feel like he’s lost the most important part of himself – he’s still the curious inventor always working on creating something new. He’s just found a way to balance it with his family. Riva’s production design choice underlines Tony’s overall development as a character and shows just how far he’s come since Iron Man.
