Marvel Studios has a lot of exciting movies in the works right now. Thor 2 begins shooting in the UK next month, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Ant-Man are slated for release in 2014.
One movie that fans are hoping doesn’t get overlooked is the adaptation of Runaways, a comic book series by Brian K. Vaughan about six kids who discover their parents are members of an evil group – consisting of crime lords, mutants, wizards, aliens, and other evildoers – called the Pride.
The kids join forces to take down their parents and, in the process, discover they have powers of their own (one is a witch, another an alien, another a mutant, etc.). Ultimately, they work together to protect L.A. from super villains vying to fill the void the Pride left behind.
At Comic-Con this year, Iron Man 3 co-writer, Drew Pearce, talked to Girl Gamer Dot Com about the Runaways adaptation. Pearce was asked to work on Iron Man 3 based on a draft he wrote of Runaways a year-and-a-half ago.
When asked about Runaways in the interview, Pearce mentioned his love for the series, saying:
“I’ve loved that comic book since the day it came out. And I think Brian K. Vaughan is pretty much a genius. … Truthfully, I’d do anything to get that movie on the big screen. Not anything, but quite a lot.”
The fact that Runaways is a series largely about a group of kids is a refreshing change of pace from the superhero movies we’ve gotten so used to lately. Plus, it naturally lends itself to being a smaller, lower budget movie than the others on Marvel’s docket, which fits with Marvel’s strategy to bring more obscure heroes to the big screen.
Runaways certainly has its place in the Marvel Universe, and despite (or maybe because of) the contrast to the other movies in the works right now, should fit in nicely. Earlier today, we reported that Marvel is currently exploring a TV series with ABC, so perhaps Runways will take that route.
