Apple‘s new iPhone 12 is expected to be announced during Tuesday’s ‘Hi, Speed’ event, but eager customers now have a good preview of what’s to come, thanks to a recent and massive leak. Previous leaks covered sizes and prices, but the new information adds even more detail. The biggest leak to date confirms many of the details previously known, but adds extra information about 5G capability and camera improvements.
Apple usually has a single end of year event to announce the newest iPhone, but this year, the global pandemic slowed things down and changed the schedule for even Apple’s mighty supply chain. The ‘Time Flies’ event revealed two new Apple Watch models, the Series 6 and Apple Watch SE, as well as a new iPad Air 4. The iPad Air 4 update was quite impressive, adding features to the mid-range tablet that had only been found on iPad Pro models before. With the iPhone 12 yet to be announced, rumors and leaks have had even longer to collect and quite a bit of information has now been gathered on Apple’s next smartphone.
According to the source, the main camera will have a much wider aperture, increasing from f/1.8 on the iPhone 11 to f/1.6 on the iPhone 12. This is a significant improvement in the amount of light that will be brought into the sensor and should benefit images greatly. Besides improving low-light photos, it aids with natural bokeh. The iPhone 12 Pro Max is said to have a longer telephoto than the iPhone 12 Pro, 65mm versus 52mm. This equates to a 2.5 times zoom, versus the 2 times zoom of the smaller models. Apparently, the iPhone 12 Pro Max will also feature a 47-percent larger image sensor with 1.7-micrometer pixels. Whether this will result in a higher megapixel output or if it will be converted to the usual 12-megapixel is unknown. Supposedly, the HDR recording, Deep Fusion and Night Mode will all see improvements, though this was to be expected. The source, Kang, posted the information to Weibo and is known for accurate leaks.
iPhone 12 Pricing & Colors
Most of the details shared in this leak agree with what was said by other sources. There should be four new iPhone 12 models overall. The Pro models will have three cameras and LiDAR, while the standard will have two. Ultra-wide and wide being common among all models, while the Pro models add telephoto. The smallest, iPhone 12 mini, will have a 5.4-inch screen and start at $699. The iPhone 12 with 6.1-inch screen is expected to be $799. The iPhone 12 Pro will be the same size as the iPhone 12, but priced at $999. The largest iPhone ever made, the iPhone 12 Pro Max is expected to start at $1099. 5G is thought to be included with all iPhone 12 models and the US models should receive support for mmWave and Sub-6.
Colors were also shared. The iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 will supposedly have the most color options, including black, white, red, blue and green. The Pro models are said to include gold, silver, graphite and blue. Some additional details that have not been mentioned by other sources are about the display. Kang said all four models will use a Super Retina XDR Display and feature a ceramic base glass, which increases hardness and fall resistance. Shipping dates were given as October 16 for iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro, November 13 for iPhone 12 mini and November 20 for iPhone 12 Pro Max. A final note from the Weibo post was translated as “The above is all nonsense. Just look at it. Don’t overinterpret it.” Whatever that means, the iPhone 12 will almost certainly be revealed by Apple on Tuesday, so the wait won’t be long.
