Robert Kirkman’s young superhero is only just getting started with the official Invincible season 2 trailer. Based on Kirkman’s graphic novel series of the same name, the animated Prime Video show centers on Mark Grayson, the eponymous hero as he grapples with being the son of the world’s most powerful superhero, who himself is hiding a very dark secret. With an ensemble cast led by Steven Yeun and J.K. Simmons, Invincible quickly became a hit for Prime Video, garnering rave reviews and already being renewed through season 3, with season 2 having taken over two years to hit the public.
As part of the show’s New York Comic Con panel, Prime Video has revealed the official Invincible season 2 trailer.
The trailer, as seen above, reveals a deeper look at the next chapter of the hit Prime Video show, namely Mark’s desire to get back into the fold of fighting crime after being left beaten by his father Omni-Man in the season 1 finale. His return won’t be a smooth one, though, as the video teases he continues to grapple with the evil legacy left behind by his father and subsequently pits him against multiversal villain Angstrom Levy.
What The New Trailer Reveals About Invincible Season 2 & The Future
While it’s been known that he would be the primary antagonist for the season, it should come as exciting confirmation that Kirkman and showrunner Simon Racioppa are taking a comics-accurate approach to adapting Levy’s origin story. Introduced in issue No. 16 of the Invincible comics, Levy is a scientist who has the ability to create portals to alternate universes and desires to create a machine that will allow him to harness the knowledge of the other versions of him. Despite having the assistance of the Mauler twins from multiple dimensions, Levy’s experiment fails when Invincible intervenes, resulting in a major deformity in his body and leaving him with the desire to get revenge on Mark.
Much of the Invincible season 2 trailer shows Mark struggling to come to terms with his and his father’s Viltrumite heritage and the knowledge that their race is keen on conquering Earth for themselves. Seth Rogen’s Allen the Alien is even seen pleading to what appears to members of the Coalition of Planets that Mark is nothing like his father, and that he desires to do good for Earth, while others on the planet continue to warn the young hero that his powers make him dangerous more than they do a help. This ominous dialogue is paired with imagery of the collateral damage he incurs during his battles, as well as Mark distraught at the emotional hardships his abilities are bringing him.
At first glance, this does seemingly tease his turn toward villainy at some point in Invincible season 2, or even foreshadow that the visions of an evil Mark are actually that of a future version of him that he can prevent from coming true. The more likely explanation for this, however, stems from Levy’s origin story, as in the comics the version of the scientist that puts his variant on the path to becoming a multiverse villain came from a universe in which Mark had turned evil and destroyed the world. Levy’s invitation for an unknown group to get revenge for what Invincible did to their world and the image of Mark warning humanity not to resist on a screen in Times Square are practically lifted directly from Kirkman’s graphic novel pages, though with some minor tweaks made for the show already, it will be interesting to see how this character dynamic plays out.
The first four episodes of Invincible season 2 will air weekly beginning November 3, followed by a mid-season hiatus with the rest premiering in early 2024.
