Invincible Season 2 Is Fixing Season 1’s Biggest Amber Controversy

Invincible Season 2 Is Fixing Season 1’s Biggest Amber Controversy

Mark Grayson’s girlfriend, Amber Bennett, is much more likable in Invincible season 2 compared to season 1, but that may lead to something catastrophic down the road. At first, Amber and Mark’s relationship followed the tropes of a teenage superhero dating a normal person, as Mark’s responsibilities got in the way of his availability as a boyfriend, which understandably frustrated her. However, in one of season 1’s biggest twists, Amber revealed that she knew for weeks that Mark was a superhero before he told her the truth, thus rebuffing him for lying to her the whole time.

This twist proved to be divisive because it didn’t add up. Amber’s frustration with Mark was justified beforehand, presumably because she didn’t know what he was doing. There were hints sprinkled throughout that maybe she knew Mark was a superhero all along. Still, in Invincible season 1, episode 6, “You Look Kinda Dead,” she scolds him for leaving her and the others to fend for themselves before telling him the next day that she knew for weeks that he’s a superhero, which means she shamed him despite knowing that he was saving people’s lives. That twist was not received well, but Amber has already redeemed herself in season 2.

Invincible Season 2 Has Improved Amber’s Characterization

Amber Has Been Much More Empathetic In Season 2

Invincible Season 2 Is Fixing Season 1’s Biggest Amber Controversy

Despite the controversy, Amber is a much better character in Invincible season 2 while not being completely overwritten. She’s there for Mark, who is dealing with the aftermath of both his father leaving him and Mark’s near-death experience. She is excited by the prospect of the two of them attending college together. She even welcomes Mark’s using his powers to make romantic gestures like taking her to Las Vegas for lunch. All while still attending the soup kitchen and helping with a political campaign. Thus far, she’s been one of season 2’s more likable characters after a rocky season 1.

Between season 1 and season 2, Amber has shown that she’s accepted Mark for who he is, and their relationship appears to have been taken to new heights. Their relationship development has also been important to Mark because not only does the superhero job make him busy, but he also lost his father, the one person he looked up to most. Amber’s understanding of his situation may very well be what prevents Mark from turning into another Omni-Man, as he fears.

Invincible Season 2 Is Setting Amber Up For Tragedy

Invincible May Be Setting Up A Brutally Harsh Lesson

Though they are in a much better place, Mark’s relationship with Amber could be very costly in the long run. There may have been a foreshadowing of Amber’s fate in Invincible season 2, episode 2, “In About Six Hours, I Lose My Virginity to a Fish,” Mark tells Amber that “some secrets should never be revealed.” Invincible may hint that despite Mark and Amber being on good terms, it won’t end well between them. Mark has a new enemy — that he doesn’t even know about — in Angstrom Levy, who showed in that same episode that he’s looking into how he can destroy Invincible, which could impact Amber and Mark’s relationship.

At worst, Angstrom’s goals may lead to Amber getting killed in the crossfire when he inevitably battles Mark. At best, they may just lead to their breakup, which would have a profound impact on Mark. If that’s how their relationship ends, Mark may have realized in the worst way that he was right. She should never have known who he was. However, in Invincible season 1, the point of Mark Grayson being Invincible was that what makes him the way he is comes from his will, not his powers. That could very much shine through again if Mark loses Amber, whether that’s through her death or their breakup.
