James Wan’s “true story” supernatural horror The Conjuring is out in theaters this week, and it’s not the only ghost tale that the director has been working on recently. Insidious: Chapter 2, the follow-up to 2010’s sleeper hit Insidious, is out this fall and promises more of the nasty ghosts and demons that frightened audiences the first time around.
Insidious: Chapter 2 picks up almost immediately after the events of the last film, with the Lambert family temporarily moving into Lorraine’s (Barbara Hershey) house until they can find somewhere more permanent to live. However, as the first film demonstrated emphatically, the ghosts do not haunt houses, but the people living with them, and the Lamberts soon realize that their troubles are far from over.
IGN has released the first full clip from the movie, shown above, in which two paranormal investigators take a look around an apparently empty house and get an unpleasant surprise. Hopefully, this snippet isn’t too representative of the film as a whole; the rocking horses are a little spooky, but the atmosphere is quickly broken by the somewhat lame jump-scare at the end (which is accompanied by the sound of the film’s composer banging his head on a piano).
The two paranormal investigators are Tucker (Angus Sampson) and Specs (played by screenwriter Leigh Whannell), returning for another round after initially being called in by the Lamberts in the first movie. The third ghost expert, Elise (Lin Shaye), will also appear in Insidious: Chapter 2, and her séance mask was glimpsed very briefly in the trailer.
The first poster for the film is also here, depicting the Lambert family cowering from some menacing entity, with Foster’s right eye notably exposed. The posters for Insidious featured a number of variations on the same image of Dalton standing in front of the Lambert house, the most memorable of them showing the word “Insidious” written across his eye in very small text, just enough to distort his gaze in a creepy way. The poster for Insidious: Chapter 2 is a little simpler, but it still makes for a good teaser. Check it out below:

The poster reinforces one of the plot aspects that was highlighted several times in the trailer for Insidious Chapter 2: that Patrick Wilson’s character, Josh Lambert, will continue to be influenced by supernatural forces and may even end up going full Amityville on his family. After all, that hammer in Renai’s hand probably wouldn’t be too effective against ghosts.
Whannell has also promised that Insidious: Chapter 2 will feature more adventures in The Further: the ghostly realm into which Josh and Dalton are capable of astral-projecting their souls, and from which the malevolent supernatural forces can reach out and touch the living world. Joseph Bishara, who played the red-faced demon in Insidious and also composed the score for both films, is not currently credited as making an appearance in Insidious: Chapter 2, but he does have a small role in The Conjuring.
