In an interview with The Playlist, Snyder revealed that he pitched an R-rated Star Wars movie to Lucasfilm’s president Kathleen Kennedy. He also noted that his pitch was before Disney’s acquisition of the studio in October 2012, and seeing as Kennedy took her position in May 2012, this provides a very precise window when he would have given the pitch. At the time, Snyder felt optimistic about his pitch, saying, “They’re down for an R-rated movie for one, and it’s gonna be like some Jedi’s going nuts!” He also explained that his movie would have made changes to the story that were introduced in the prequel trilogy.
And I remember thinking, “They need me! This is cool, I’m gonna fix ‘Star Wars!'” Also, because I had some issues with some of the [prequel] decisions—I’m not gonna say what it was, but I just felt like [Lucasfilm] had gone astray a little bit; I know that’s sacrilegious to say, but that was my feeling.
While some of Snyder’s canceled Star Wars plans remain a mystery, it is safe to say his time with the studio would have taken the story in a more mature direction. An R-rating might not have been in the best interest of the franchise, though, especially given its family-friendly audience. Star Wars might have had a lucky escape with what would become Rebel Moon.

As Snyder’s wife pointed out, his idea to change aspects of Star Wars might not have gone over well with fans, a problem he encountered with his depiction of Superman in Man of Steel. Snyder also has a reputation for butting heads with the studio executives he works with, which likely would have been replicated at Lucasfilm. That conflict could have been driven by Snyder’s penchant for longer director’s cuts to show his full ideas. His desire to bring an R-rated Star Wars movie to the screen likely would have created conflict with the franchise’s family-friendly reputation and box-office goals.
