After appearing in the first film back in 2007, Alica Braga addresses whether she will reprise her role for I Am Legend 2. Directed by Francis Lawrence, I Am Legend stars Will Smith as Dr. Robert Neville, the sole New York City survivor of a plague that killed off most of humanity and turned the rest into vampire-like monsters. More than 15 years after the original, I Am Legend 2 has now been officially announced, with Smith set to return and Michael B. Jordan set to costar.
Now, following the I Am Legend 2 announcement, Braga addresses her possible return as Anna in a recent interview with Collider. While it doesn’t sound like anything is official, Braga would definitely be up for reprising her role. Check out Braga’s full comment below:
“How surprised? I was super surprised and very curious. I was almost jumping on the phone and saying, “Can I please be in it? Can I please be in it? Can I please be in it?” I’m a huge [screenwriter Akiva Goldsman], I think he’s such a wonderful writer, and he basically was the first writer that I got to see the [work part] close from coming to the US.
“It was my first American film, I was very excited to hear that they were continuing with the movie. I hope they do! I don’t know where they are with it, but I hope they do.”
Everything We Know About I Am Legend 2
Although the film is still in the early stages of development, I Am Legend 2 is already shaping up to be an interesting continuation of the story. The biggest hurdle to overcome, however, is the fact that Smith’s Dr. Neville dies at the end of the first movie. To overcome this problem, the sequel will apparently be treating the I Am Legend‘s alternate ending (the one in which Neville survives) as canon.
I Am Legend 2 will feature the return of Goldsman on script duties, but it’s still unknown if Lawrence will return as director. In terms of story details, Goldsman previously confirmed that the film will pick up “a few decades” after the first, with the writer citing HBO’s The Last Of Us as an inspiration in terms of the sequel’s evolved global landscape. The writer also teases that I Am Legend 2 will also explore central themes in the Richard Matheson novel upon which the film franchise is based.
Beyond that, it’s still unclear how exactly Jordan will fit into the franchise. Jordan didn’t appear in the original I Am Legend, meaning whoever he does play will be someone audiences haven’t seen before. Despite her willingness to return, it’s also unknown if Braga will reprise her role as Anna. With development on I Am Legend 2 seemingly being fast-tracked, more information on the sequel will hopefully be released in the coming months.
