“I Just Laid Down & Cried”: Gina Carano Speaks Out On Disney Firing & Lawsuit

Gina Carano has shared an emotional interview about her firing from The Mandalorian, and her impending lawsuit against Disney. In February 2021, actress Gina Carano was abruptly fired from The Mandalorian and the now-canceled Star Wars spinoff Rangers of the New Republic. She’s now filed a lawsuit against Disney, funded by Elon Musk.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Carano discussed the emotional cost of the firing and her decision to take Disney to court. “I just laid down and cried and cried,” Carano recalled, remembering when she learned she had been fired over social media. For Carano, Disney’s statement that her posts were “abhorrent and unacceptable” stung. “I curled into a fetal position,” she continued.

“It’s not that I didn’t think that something like that could happen. It was that I couldn’t imagine they would put out this horrendous statement about me after working with me — the most powerful entertainment company in the world saying that about me.”

Lucasfilm announces Gina Carano won’t appear as Cara Dune in The Mandalorian season 3. Here are the social media posts that got her fired.

Gina Carano Has No Regrets

Gina Carano as Cara Dune in The Mandalorian

Carano seemed set to flourish at Disney, with The Mandalorian showrunner excitedly telling her that her life was about to change given plans for her to star in her own Star Wars spinoff. A series of social media posts saw her court controversy, however, on everything ranging from Black Lives Matter to her anti-vax stance. According to Carano, the most explosive reaction from Disney came when she jokingly posted on social media that her pronouns were “boop/bop/beep.”

Several warnings followed, along with what Carano describes as a “reeducation camp” Zoom meeting with two transgender representatives from GLAAD. She then went through media training, where she recalls being told, “It’s not what you say — it’s how it’s interpreted. You’re giving very logical responses to an emotional reaction.” Matters continued to escalate, and Carano refused to apologize for her conduct – only to be abruptly fired. She learned the news at the same time as the world, when she saw it on social media.

Carano has now filed a lawsuit against Disney, and the company has until April 9 to respond to the legal petition. Even now, Carano insists she has no regrets; she claims she is “thinking about finally being healthier and having this monkey off my back and telling my story and just getting on with my life.” Given the timescale, it won’t be long before there is more news about this particular Star Wars lawsuit.
