“I Hope This Movie Doesn’t Flop”: The Boogeyman 2 Potential Teased By Director

Warning! Spoilers ahead for The Boogeyman.

The Boogeyman director Rob Savage teases that he already has an idea for a sequel, but the first film has to do well at the box office for it to happen. Based on a short story by acclaimed and prolific author Stephen King, The Boogeyman is the latest in a long line of adaptations of his work. The horror film hit theaters on June 2, earning mixed to positive reviews and coming in just below projections for its opening weekend box office haul.

Following The Boogeyman‘s release, Savage now makes clear in an interview with ComicBook.com that he already has an idea ready to go for The Boogeyman 2. Whether the sequel happens or not, however, will depend upon how much money the first film makes. Check out Savage’s full comment below:

“I’m really praying that this movie plays well enough to get a sequel because we’ve got an incredible idea for a sequel. Me and the team, and Mark Heyman who wrote this one. I think you’d have to include this cast of characters, they’re so kind of fundamental to the character and the personality of this movie.

“That being said, it kind of comes at the horror in a different way. It feels like its own thing. And it’s the kind of horror movie that, even if it wasn’t a sequel, it would be something I’d be so excited to do, and a story I’d really love to tell. But to make it as a sequel to this movie, in the world of Boogeyman, would be a dream. So I hope this movie doesn’t flop so I can come make that.”

How The Boogeyman’s Ending sets Up A Sequel

“I Hope This Movie Doesn’t Flop”: The Boogeyman 2 Potential Teased By Director

The Boogeyman follows a family of three, Will Harper (Chris Messina), Sadie (Sophie Thatcher), and Sawyer (Vivien Lyra Blair), as they deal with the titular being haunting them in their house. The creature, it is revealed, is feeding off of their collective grief following the passing of the family matriarch. The movie ends with the family promising to embrace and collectively heal from their trauma, using positive memories of their mother to seemingly banish the being once and for all.

The Boogeyman‘s ending includes one final scene, however, that teases that the eponymous monster may still be sticking around to haunt at least one Harper family member. After the family departs from a group therapy session, the therapist calls Sadie back into the room. When she enters, though, there is no therapist, and the closet door is cracked ominously open, teasing that Sadie’s journey with the creature may not be over.

The film already takes a number of liberties with King’s source material, expanding the short story into a feature-length film, but any potential sequel would be heading into entirely uncharted territory. Interestingly, it sounds like even if The Boogeyman‘s box office numbers aren’t good enough for a sequel, Savage could still do the same idea with different characters in a different world. It’s still so soon after The Boogeyman‘s release that it’s unclear what the chances of a sequel are, but audiences may not have seen the last of the titular creature just yet.
