“I Have No Memory of My Mother”: Luke Skywalker May Finally Learn Padmé’s True History

Luke Skywalker may finally learn the history of his mother Padmé Amidala in the Star Wars canon. Thanks to a new tease from Lucasfilm Publishing and Marvel Comics, it’s been teased that a key character connected to Padmé will be searching for Luke in between Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. As such, it’s quite likely that Luke may finally learn about his mother whom he never knew.

Marvel Comics recently announced their titles for Free Comic Book Day including Star Wars/Darth Vader #1, a two-in-one offering readers will be able to pick for free from comic retailers on May 4th (which just so happens to also be Star Wars Day). While the first story from Charles Soule will see the Rebel heroes returning to Echo Base, the second story from Greg Pak will see Darth Vader using “a surprise character from the past” to help him find his son Luke. However, the synopsis also confirms that Sabé, Padmé’s former handmaid and ex-agent of Vader himself will be searching for Luke as well.

“I Have No Memory of My Mother”: Luke Skywalker May Finally Learn Padmé’s True History

As has been seen in prior issues of Darth Vader, Sabé knows that Anakin Skywalker and Vader are the same man, as well as Luke’s true parentage. The only thing she doesn’t know is that Padmé also gave birth to Leia. Because Sabé has never met Luke, it’s quite possible that she and the young Jedi could finally meet in this new issue, which would have some exciting implications for the Star Wars timeline.

Although she did her best to try and bring Vader back to the light when she was in the Dark Lord’s service, Sabé ultimately failed. Furthermore, Sabé had begun embracing the darkness in the name of order, a decision that saw her rejecting her fellow handmaids when they tried to rescue her. That said, the recent Force wave felt across the galaxy threw Vader’s powers out of balance, resulting in Sabé being thrown into an ocean where she was believed to have been lost.

However, this new preview has confirmed that Sabé still lives. Likewise, it seems as though she will soon resolve herself to find and finally meet with Luke. If that is indeed proven true, it stands to reason that Sabé will likely tell Luke about his mother and all the good that she did for the galaxy, as well as her dying belief that there was still good in Vader (something Sabé saw via a partial recording of Padmé’s death).

Luke and Leia in Return of the Jedi

It’s worth noting that Luke tells Leia in Return of the Jedi that he has no memory of his mother. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that he wasn’t told about her at some point as is being teased with this new issue releasing on Free Comic Book Day. To that end, Luke’s redemption of Vader could be put in a whole new light if it’s soon revealed that Padmé’s dying belief is what motivates her son to try and bring his father back from the dark side in the Star Wars canon.
