As Ric, Nightwing wanted absolutely nothing to do with his past life, furious over people continually telling him who he was, when they only described someone he never knew. Because of this, Ric pushed away everyone he used to be close with, including his former love interests Barbara Gordon and Starfire. Ric eventually met and started dating a local bar owner, Beatrice Bennett. The two were deeply in love, but when Dick regained his memory, he naturally wanted to return to his old life. Feeling his vigilante life was much too dangerous a place for Bea, he broke her heart. Now, Nightwing is saddled with the feelings and love of someone he used to be.

However, the mysteries of the Hold still need to be explored. As Ric, he never cared how Beatrice Bennett was connected to Blüdhaven’s secret group, who act as a vault for the dark side of the city to store its secrets. Now in possession of a message from Dick’s past, the Hold must be confronted – with Bea as their apparent leader, Captain Blüd.

Ric was constantly telling everyone that they didn’t know him, that he wasn’t Dick Grayson and wanted nothing to do with his past life. Now that Dick has regained his memories, he’s being haunted by his past life as Ric. It’s an inversion of the difficulty Ric went through. While Nightwing and Batgirl’s romance has been a joy for fans, they knew that eventually, it would give way to fresh drama – it’s possible that Captain Blüd represents a sea change in Dick Grayson’s life, if he’s actually able to survive confronting the Hold on their home turf.
