After Barbie & The Sims, Margot Robbie Is Now Producing A Monopoly Movie

In March 2024, word broke that Margot Robbie would help create her newest game film since Barbie The Sims Movie. It’s currently unknown whether Margot Robbie will appear onscreen or just behind the camera. In either case, there’s hope that this could be a good movie based on the unexpected success of Barbie. However, at CinemaCon 2024, it became clear that Margot Robbie’s odd movies aren’t just a fluke. Screen Rant confirmed on Twitter that Margot Robbie’s production company, LuckyChaps, plans to produce the Monopoly movie alongside Lionsgate and Hasbro.

The Monopoly Movie was first announced in 2008 with Universal Pictures as the production company, but it got stuck in development hell, switching studios and directors. News came out in 2019 that Kevin Hart would star in the movie, but then everything was crickets. More news finally came out in December 2023 that the movie was once again in the works. It’s exciting that news is coming out so soon after that confirmation, indicating that the movie might finally be moving forward.

In anybody else’s hands, the live-action Monopoly movie might sound silly and illogical. After all, even the best board game movies, like Battleship and Clue, have largely flopped with audiences and critics. Plus, the game Monopoly doesn’t have an internal narrative backstory or characters like the character Barbie does. However, everyone also underestimated the ability for the Barbie doll to be a successful adult live-action movie. If anyone is capable of turning Monopoly into a blockbuster movie that brings in billions, it’s Margot Robbie.

Margot Robbie’s Toy/Game Adaptation Streak Is One Of Hollywood’s Weirdest-Ever Trends

Barbie (Margot Robbie) in the Void at the end of Barbie.

Multiple strange movie trends have existed across the decades. From 1923 to 1932, Hollywood produced 29 different movies about a dog named Rin Tin Tin. Jaws inspired a bizarre number of sea monster ripoffs. Studios started producing holiday-themed slasher movies – which seemed like a fun but unnecessary niche – after the success of Halloween. Despite multiple weird trends, possibly the most odd is Margot Robbie’s toy and game adaptation streak.

When Margot Robbie first entered Hollywood, the Australian actress established herself as a strong leading lady in dramatic and action movies. She became a household name after taking on her iconic role as Harley Quinn in the DC cinematic universe. Based on Margot Robbie’s movies at the start and how she became famous, it would’ve seemed unthinkable that she’d end up producing numerous toy and game adaptations. Yet, somehow, it seems like the perfect fit for her after the Barbie movie. Her creativity and imagination are unmatched, allowing her to think of these toys and games as a bigger story.

How A Monopoly Movie Could Actually Work (Barbie Proves It Can)Milburn Pennybags with cash raining down on him in Ruthless: Monopoly's Secret History documetary.

Barbie does something unique from other toy and game movies by blending together the fictional land of Barbieland and the real world. It also makes important social commentary on our society. Both of these approaches are the keys to a successful Monopoly movie. The Monopoly Movie could start out in a place centered on the game and then collide with our world. The writers will likely need to add human characters for this to work.

Additionally, Monopoly is the perfect game to make commentary on the harms of greed, wealth, and capitalism. The entire game predicates on these concepts being a good thing. However, this isn’t reflected in our society, where the rich exploit the poor. By taking this approach, The Monopoly Movie will appeal to the younger generations who reject capitalism and have an “eat the rich” mentality. Ultimately, Barbie laid the framework for The Monopoly Movie to actually succeed. Had the upcoming film been made back in 2008 when it was announced, it likely would’ve failed just like other movies centered on games.
