Invincible creator Robert Kirkman has addressed what the gap between season 2 and season 3 will be like following a two-year wait for new episodes. The animated superhero series ended season 1 on April 29, 2021, with season 2 not arriving until November 3, 2023. While a special titled Invincible: Atom Eve was released in July 2023, the gap between seasons still meant viewers had to wait over two years for the main storyline to continue.
Speaking with Variety, Kirkman addressed this seasonal gap, saying Invincible season 2 and 3 won’t have as long a wait between them. In particular, he said the goal is to make a new season every year, though production could also take as long as 18 months. Check out what Kirkman had to say below:
[A new season every year] is the goal. The realities of animation may make that a little difficult, but what I can guarantee is that the gap between Season 1 and 2 is the longest gap we should ever have, you know, barring some unforeseen catastrophe. It may be every 18 months or 16 months or 13 months or every 12 months. We’re still trying to figure that out.
How Many Seasons Will Invincible Have?
Invincible season 1 ended with Omni-Man leaving Earth after his battle with Mark, as villains that had been defeated in past episodes began plotting their individual plans for revenge. While the wait to see these plot elements resolved has been long, Kirkman’s reassurance is that this won’t happen for the rest of the series. This makes sense given how long the show could be, as season 1 only covered a fraction of events from the original comic series.
Kirkman had previously stated the show could run until season 7 or season 8, indicating just how much of the story is left to tell. With 144 issues in the comic series, it seems the show will easily be able to run for as long as its creator says it will. There’s also a chance that, as storylines are fleshed out and the show maintains success, it could run for even longer than is currently planned.
With plenty of new characters in Invincible season 2 and unique stories to be explored, the series has plenty of material for the next batch of episodes and beyond. Since another long wait between seasons likely won’t happen, audiences can experience the rest of the story at a quicker pace. It also means more elements of the series can be introduced quicker, allowing for even more twists and turns to come to light sooner.
