Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Darth Vader #41A powerful new Darth Vader line settles whether the Sith Lord is more machine or man in the Star Wars canon. Needing his suit of imposing life support armor, helmet, and breathing apparatus to compensate for his extensive injuries, the Dark Lord of the Sith also requires the use of prosthetic limbs. While it had been suggested by Vader’s former master Obi-Wan Kenobi that the Sith Lord was “more machine than man”, Vader’s feelings on the subject have now been epically revealed.
As seen in the new Darth Vader #41 from Greg Pak and Raffaele Ienco, Vader is facing the living droid virus known as the Scourge who’s seeking to corrupt all droids and organics in the new Dark Droids crossover. However, the Scourge is particularly interested in Vader given his status as a cyborg and connection to the dark side of the Force. Conversely, Vader reveals in this issue that he wants the Scourge’s power and access to his droid hivemind, resulting in an intense battle of wills along with one of the best new Darth Vader quotes in the entire Star Wars canon.
Refusing to be broken by the sheer magnitude of all the minds suddenly crashing upon him, Vader’s power in the Force allowed him to overcome the Scourge whom he’d cut off from the rest of the galaxy via a closed circuit within his suit, giving the Sith Lord access to the hivemind. As such, Vader proved his true nature regardless of the AI virus who desperately wanted the Sith to submit as a machine: “I am Vader. That is All”.

One of The Sith Lord’s Best Lines
After destroying several of the Scouge’s corrupted droids with an impressive surge of power from the dark side, it seems as though Vader can now wield his own hivemind army of droids as the Dark Droids crossover comes to a close. Furthermore, Vader confirmed that both his human emotions and the few pieces of him that were still intact were not weaknesses as the Scourge suggested, nor the mechanical components that make up Vader’s darkly imposing appearance ever since he came up from the operating table at the end of Revenge of the Sith.
All in all, Vader effectively declared the power of his whole being while rejecting any perceived weaknesses, destroying his foes with the Force in an amazing display of raw strength. Subsequently, Vader definitively created a scenario in which there was no one left to refute his claims in the aftermath either. Going forward, it does seem as though the Dark Lord of the Sith will have access to the Scourge’s powers in his ongoing comic series, allowing Vader to corrupt and control any droid just as the virus did with its hivemind.

While Darth Vader has tried and failed to overthrow his master before in the Star Wars timeline, the difference this time is that he now wields power which isn’t coming from the Empire itself. This means that the power of the Scourge presumably can’t be turned against him once he likely tries going after Palpatine once more.
However, the end of the issue does introduce a new faction of characters calling themselves the Imperial Schism. As such, they look to be a secret cabal of Imperial leaders seeking to stage a coup against the Emperor, and this issue sees them debating whether Darth Vader will join them or not. Considering the events of Return of the Jedi and Vader’s continued service to Palpatine, it’s safe to say that the Sith Lord will fail once more, even if he does join this new Imperial group in future issues.
