The Hunger Games will be re-released in select theaters ahead of the franchise’s upcoming prequel film, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. The original films based on the novel series by Suzanne Collins, chronicling Katniss Everdeen’s time in the Hunger Games, a yearly battle between children in the nation of Panem. The upcoming prequel series will reveal the origins of antagonist President Coriolanus Snow 64 years before Katniss’ story.
Now, Fathom Events has announced The Hunger Games will be returning to select theaters in anticipation of The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. Theaters across the US will be playing the original film on Sunday, October 15 and Wednesday, October 18 at 7:00 p.m. in local time zones. Tickets can be purchased at Fathom Events to relive the original movie on the big screen.

The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes sees Coriolanus (Tom Blyth), nicknamed “Coryo” at this stage of his life, acting as a mentor for the 10th Hunger Games. He mentors District 12’s Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler), hoping to win the game despite the odds not always being in their favor. Because it’s a prequel, watching all four of The Hunger Games films will be vital to understanding the new movie. Which explains why the first movie is being released prior to the prequel.
However, while the story will have strong foundations in the original series, the movie’s prequel status means it has a vastly different cast. In addition to Blyth and Zegler, the cast of The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes includes Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones), Josh Andrés Rivera (West Side Story), Jason Schwartzman (Spider-Man: Across the Spider-verse), and Viola Davis (Fences) among others. The new cast and time period will give Panem a very different feel from Katniss’ movies, establishing what the nation was like before her time.
With Fathom Events offering a chance to see The Hunger Games again in theaters a month ahead of the prequel, it’s unclear if other films in the franchise will get the same treatment. However, since The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes arrives on November 17, there may not be enough time for the other movies to come back to the big screen. Even so, the first film can act as a good primer for the upcoming prequel, and a reminder of how Panem operates.
