Hunger Games Prequel Director Details The Conditions For A Follow-up Movie

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes director Francis Lawrence shares his conditions for returning for a follow-up film. Taking place decades before the events of the Hunger Games movies, the upcoming prequel is once again based on source material from author Suzanne Collins. The new movie stars Rachel Zegler as Lucy Gray Baird, a District 12 tribute who is paired with a young Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blythe) during the 10th Hunger Games.

Now, ahead of The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes release date, Lawrence tells EW what it would take for him to return to direct another installment. While there aren’t currently any plans in place for a follow-up movie, the director stresses that source material from Collins would be a must. Check out Lawrence’s full comment below:

“If Suzanne has another thematic idea that she feels fits into the world of Panem — whether with new people or familiar characters — I’d be interested in being a part of it. But I don’t have any pull of just going, like, ‘I would love to do Finnick’s games.’ What are the thematic underpinnings that make it worth telling? The original ones were all about the consequences of war. [BOSS] is about the state of nature. That’s what makes them feel rich — and why they’ve stood the test of time.”
