Hunger Games Movies Future Addressed By Young Snow Actor

Tom Blyth addresses the chances of another Hunger Games movie after The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Blyth plays a young Coriolanus Snow in The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, which tells the story of the future President of Panem as he grows up in the Capitol. Throughout the movie, he starts to evolve into the villain known from the original movies as he trains District 12 tribute Lucy Gray Baird during the 10th annual Hunger Games.

As per Observer, Blyth discusses the prospects of more Hunger Games movies after The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. According to the actor, there is “hope” for another film due to the potential continuation of “relationships” like that of Coryo and Tigris, as well as the ambiguous ending of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Check out the full quote from Blyth below:

From all of us, I think there’s hope. I think we all feel this more to tell from these characters’ perspectives. A lot of people want to see whether Lucy Gray and Coryo ever manage to meet each other again and what happens there. Because obviously—no spoilers—what happens in the woods is a big cliffhanger. And between Tigris and Coryo [there is] this really loving relationship. I think people who have seen it are really rooting for those cousins to hold on to each other because it’s them against the world. So I think we all want to see those relationships play out further.

That being said, what I really respect about Francis Lawrence and [producer] Nina Jacobson and Lionsgate is that they don’t just want to keep churning out films for the sake of it. They really do respect the literature and the writing of Suzanne Collins, the creator. If they’re going to make a film it’s going to come from her. It’s going to come from the impetus of her asking another big sociological question and then putting it down on paper. They’re not just trying to build a franchise for the sake of a franchise. Which I, as a filmmaker and creator, really respect. It’s the thing that made me less fearful going into it, like “Yes, I’m making this big thing that has its own wheels and its own machine, but it’s also real filmmaking that comes from the text.”

Are More Hunger Games Movies Likely?

As Blyth alludes to, both director Francis Lawrence and producer Nina Jacobson have been adamant that they will not make another Hunger Games without author Suzanne Collins. Lawrence kept The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes as a single film adapted from Collins’ work, and intends to keep it that way unless she decides to write another book. Currently, all the existing Hunger Games books have been adapted for the screen already, thus rendering a Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes sequel impossible under the conditions set forth by Jacobson and Lawrence.

Nonetheless, the success of The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes may be encouraging to Lionsgate. Though the prequel has thus far been the lowest-grossing movie in the Hunger Games franchise, it has brought in a respectable box office total of $258 million worldwide at the time of writing. Additionally, the movie shows impressive staying power, as it only dropped by 33% in week 4, giving it the smallest drop of any Hunger Games film.

Hunger Games Movie

Worldwide Box Office Gross

The Hunger Games

$695 million

Catching Fire

$865 million

Mockingjay – Part 1

$755 million

Mockingjay – Part 2

$661 million

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes

$258 million (as of 12/11/23)

If The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes continues its momentum, it has a slight chance to outgross 2015’s Mockingjay – Part 2, though those prospects seem very unlikely. Still, the total for this movie, which has a reported budget of $100 million, can be considered a success, potentially pushing the chances for a sequel. Hopefully, Lionsgate will still respect the integrity of Collins’ work if a sequel is made, and avoid “churning out films for the sake of it,” as Blyth said.
