An impeccable The Hunger Games cosplay recreates Katniss Everdeen’s classic Girl on Fire dress. Based on the novel trilogy by Suzanne Collins, The Hunger Games film series includes four main films, the first of which was released in 2012. Last year, Collins’ prequel novel, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes was developed into a film of the same name.
Cosplayer @crescentshay recreates one of Katniss’s most iconic looks in The Hunger Games. In a video on their instagram, the cosplayer revealed the making of the Girl on Fire dress. In the short video, the artist showed the process of sewing the red dress together.
Impressively, the final outfit contained one major element in common with the movie: the dress lighting on fire. @crescentshay affixed flammable strips to the bottom of their otherwise fire-retardant dress. They warned viewers “PLEASE DON’T TRY THIS AT HOME” in their caption.
In addition to the Instagram feature, Crescent Shay posted a video on their YouTube channel that detailed the dress’s creation at greater length. This video showed the trial and error that went into creating the flammable element to the Girl on Fire dress, ensuring her own safety in the process.

Amidst its brutality, The Hunger Games’ Panem is a world steeped in the superficiality of physical appearance. This is largely due to the role of the Capitol in their society, as that area is one that values opulence over human life. Katniss herself is from District 12, a grittier district in Panem. Her more humble, homely background is what makes some of her Capitol-styled outfits look particularly stunning, as they exist in stark contrast to her usual fare.
Katniss’ red dress from The Hunger Games — which is literally set aflame — is perhaps one of her most visually iconic outfits in the series.
