‘Hunger Games’ Capitol Site Launches; Gary Ross Talks Multiple Movie POV’s

Lionsgate has increased its viral campaign for The Hunger Games with the launch of The Capitol site where you can register to be placed in an appropriate district. The site was teased when the hashtag #whatsmydistrict appeared at the close of The Hunger Games preview footage that premiered at the MTV Video Music Awards this weekend.

The launch comes directly on the heels of news that the film will be told from multiple perspectives  — each offering a window into the trials that Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss Everdeen is experiencing.

Based on the popular book series by Suzanne Collins The Hunger Games envisions a dystopian future in which every year two teenage “tributes,” a boy and a girl, are selected from each of the twelve districts of the country of Panem in order to fight to the death. The novel and film follow the story of Katniss Everdeen of District 12 who volunteers to take the place of her sister – to enter an arena that only one of the children will emerge from alive.

Director Gary Ross had the following to say about his take on the way to cinematically convey Katniss’ tale in an interview with MTV earlier today:

“That’s one of the fun things about it. There are times when you’re viscerally inside [Jennifer Lawrence’s] shoes, and that’s the main experience. And there are other times when you’re witnessing her the way they’re witnessing her in the Game—and she’s constantly being watched, which is one of the things that makes the book so compelling. But it’s mainly an intense first-person experience, inside Katniss’ shoes.”

Lionsgate’s newly launched site features a countdown to the games, a breakdown of the districts, and the opportunity for the visitor to secure their very own District Identification Pass (DIP).

Fans who want to register in one of the Panem districts with the nefarious Capitol can visit the viral site HERE. This writer was placed in Rue’s district from the novel (Amandla Stenberg in the film) — district 11. Rue is described as being “small and easily underestimated by other competitors,” as such, I find the placement quite apropos and would now prefer to be referred to as “District 11 Ro.”

Athough…

BOOK (and potential MOVIE) SPOILER

I’d rather not take a spear in the gut.

Gary Ross directs a cast that includes Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth from a script he wrote based on the novel by Suzanne Collins.
