How Wolverine Is Back In Deadpool 3 After Dying In Logan

With all of the hype surrounding Wolverine’s arrival in Deadpool 3, it can be easy to forget that he died in Logan, which begs the question of how he can return. Deadpool 3 is set to release on July 26 and will be the only MCU movie of 2024. Details surrounding Deadpool 3 are emerging steadily, while rumors – including the possible involvement of Taylor Swift – continue to swirl. Wolverine’s involvement is not only confirmed, however, but so are the reasons for his survival.

Wolverine was last seen in live-action in 2017’s Logan, the titular hero’s swansong. The acclaimed outing for the X-Men movie franchise’s biggest star was ostensibly his last, as it followed Logan in 2029 keeping watch over an ailing Professor X, who had recently caused the death of several mutants following a psychic seizure, and then X-23, a young mutant with Wolverine’s DNA who filled the role of his daughter. The movie was well received for its bleak but beautiful tone and a narrative that culminated in Wolverine, whose healing factor has diminished with age, succumbing to his myriad wounds.

Ryan Reynolds Explained How Wolverine Is Alive In Deadpool 3

Given that Wolverine died in Logan, many have questioned how exactly he can star alongside Deadpool in Deadpool 3, including Hugh Jackman himself. Jackman then took to social media alongside his co-star and best frenemy, Ryan Reynolds, to answer this question “how is Wolverine still alive?” The result was the video below, in which the “explanation” is inexplicably drowned out by Wham!’s “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go,” leaving it up to the viewer to discern the message through the actors’ animated gesticulations.

The tongue-in-cheek rug-pull was not devoid of one valuable tidbit, however, as Reynolds stated before being drowned out by Wham! that the events of Logan are still canon, and Deadpool 3 movie won’t touch them. Thankfully, Jackman himself elaborated in an interview with SiriusXM, via Gamespot, it is likely, thanks to the MCU’s new rules surrounding timelines, that Wolverine can simultaneously be alive in Deadpool 3 while remaining dead in the Logan timeline.

It’s all because of this device they have in the Marvel world of moving around timelines. Now we can go back because, you know, it’s “science”. So, I don’t have to screw with the Logan timeline, which was important to me. And I think probably to the fans too.

Remember, Deadpool 3 Is A Multiverse Movie

This means that the Wolverine that appears in Deadpool 3 has been taken from an earlier point in his timeline only to likely become a variant as he engages in the events of the movie. This is backed up by the Deadpool 3 set photos, which have shown that the likes of Sabertooth from Fox’s X-Men (2000) will also feature, suggesting that Deadpool has somehow managed to embroil X-Men characters from the original X-Men timeline. All of this makes sense, given that Deadpool 3 is taking place in the middle of the MCU’s Multiverse Saga.

The set photos from Deadpool 3 have also shown other variants of Deadpool will star in the movie – specifically, a long-haired and un-scarred variant, and Dogpool (who has been confirmed by Reynolds). Earlier reports have also stated that Elektra from 2003’s Daredevil will be making an appearance. All of this suggests that Deadpool 3 will be fully immersed in multiversal shenanigans, which means that the Wolverine appearing in the movie could be a variant of any timeline.

As one of the highest-rated X-Men movies, the fears that Logan‘s ending would either be retconned or diminished by a surprise resurrection are justified. Thankfully, this is confirmed to not be the case as per Hugh Jackman himself, who stated in an interview with The Empire Film Podcast (via CBR) that Deadpool 3 would be taking place before Logan. Specifically, this means that the Wolverine of Deadpool 3 is neither a zombie nor a resurrected version of the character.
