How Tom Cruise’s Latest Death-Defying Stunt Risked Shutting Down Mission: Impossible 7 Production

One of Tom Cruise’s biggest stunts in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One may have been even riskier than first expected. The beginning of the end for Cruise’s Ethan Hunt, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One sees Ethan and his team facing Esai Morales’ Gabriel in their biggest mission yet. The movie will also contain some of the biggest stunts ever featured in the Mission: Impossible franchise.

Now, Empire reports one key stunt from Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One was incredibly risky, as it was done on the first day of filming the movie. The stunt sees Cruise drive a motorcycle off a cliff and falls toward the ground as he lets go of it. Cruise did this stunt entirely practically on day one of filming, something director Christopher McQuarrie elaborates on below:

Doing [the motorcycle stunt] on Day One gave us all the time in the world to understand why he [Ethan] was doing what he was doing. If we sat around and tried to figure out these movies the old-fashioned way, you’d never find it, simply because it’s such a living, breathing thing.

Even without knowing Cruise’s death-defying motorcycle stunt was filmed on day one, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is shaping up to be the biggest film in the franchise. With a longer runtime than any other Mission: Impossible film, clocking in at 2 hours and 36 minutes, the seventh installment seems like it will be full of action and adventure. A lengthy runtime coupled with dedicated stunt work also sets up an exciting end to the Mission: Impossible franchise.

Aside from Cruise’s motorcycle stunt, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One will see the spy star battling Morales’ Gabriel on top of a train. The trailer for the film also revealed multiple chase scenes, including an extended car chase sequence involving Hayley Atwell’s Grace, and a horse chase scene in the desert. The seventh Mission: Impossible has a massive train wreck stunt as well, something Cruise wanted to include in the movie.

With so many stunts prioritized throughout the movie, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is laying the groundwork for just how massive an ending the series will have. Given how exciting the movie is expected to be, it’s unclear how Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two will be able to top the first part. Just how many more incredible, practical stunts were filmed for Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One won’t be revealed until the movie comes out in theaters on July 12.
