Shazam’s Android widget gets a much-needed upgrade, making it possible for users to quickly find songs with a tap directly from the home screen. The older widget worked like a glorified app shortcut and would simply launch the app, but the latest Shazam app update introduces a better, easier, and faster way to identify music.

Download or update Shazam from the Google Play Store. Any Android smartphone running Android 9 or higher will get the app’s latest version (version 13.7). Long press on an empty space on the home screen, tap Widgets and scroll down to find the Shazam widget for Android. Next, press and hold the widget icon and drag it to the home screen. Unlike the previous iteration, which required a 1×1 slot, the new widget needs more room with its 5×1 size. Finally, select ‘Tap to Shazam’ to get started and identify music without leaving your home screen.

Once the widget identifies a song, it will show the song title, artist and any available album or cover art. The app makes it easy to find the song info later with a persistent notification in the phone’s notification dropdown. This also provides quick access links to find the song’s lyrics or share the song information with others.

Widgets have seen a resurgence on Android since the changes introduced on Android 12, so the Shazam widget can be resized if there isn’t enough room on the home screens. It can be as small as a 1×1 widget, which shows the app logo like before, but will still work like a one-tap music identifier instead of an app shortcut button. The widget can also be made larger to cover the entire home screen panel. However, it doesn’t include any extra information and only makes the button bigger.

Users can also use Google Assistant to find and identify music on their Android smartphones. It is slower than the Shazam widget, though, and moves the user away from the home screen by pulling up the result on Google Search, while Shazam provides a discreet notification for users to find later. Apple has integrated Shazam into all its products since it acquired the service in 2018, so it’s great to see an improved app and widget now available on Android.
