How To Use Google’s Magic Eraser And Photo Features On iOS & Android

A few of Google’s most popular photography features are making their way to iOS and Android devices for users who subscribe to Google One. Previously, the tools — including Magic Eraser — were exclusive to Pixel smartphones. The company launched an extensive campaign to market its Pixel-exclusive features following the release of the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro last year. However, in a surprise move, Google announced that it would be bringing some of these perks to Google One subscribers in February 2022. For current Google One subscribers on non-Pixel devices, that’s great news.

As part of the change, Pixel users can still access the photography features without a monthly subscription. But iOS and Android users who subscribe to Google One, a subscription service that costs between $1.99 and $9.99 per month, can access these features in the Google Photos app. After signing in to the Google Photos app on iOS or Android with a Google One account, users will be able to see the new tools, including the Magic Eraser function. In order to utilize the new features, users might need to update the Google Photos app in the App Store or the Google Play Store. Additionally, Google says the features aren’t available on the Google Photos web client.

With Magic Eraser in the Google Photos app, the company’s artificial intelligence can detect unwanted objects in photos without any specific input needed. If Magic Eraser detects these objects, it will outline them and prompt the user to remove them. After viewing the selected objects, users can either choose to erase the objects or leave the photos as-is.

Users can also manually use the Magic Eraser to remove unwanted people or objects from a photo. Select the photo and tap the edit button (three horizontal sliders) on the bottom row of options. Tap the ‘Magic Eraser‘ button to open up the tool, and circle the portion of the photo that will be removed. Google Photos will save the new version of the photo as a separate image in the user’s photo library.

Besides the Magic Eraser, users can also take advantage of a new HDR effect for videos. Similar to the option for photos, users can tap the ‘HDR‘ button in the editing menu to enhance the brightness and contrast in videos. For photos, users can use new collage effects to create curated collections with a few unique designs. Users that purchase print photos or books from Google can also get free shipping on their orders.

Google One subscribers can access these features on their iOS or Android device now and a free trial will be available in March.
