How to Play Ronin Class in Ghost of Tsushima: Legends (Tips, Tricks, & Techniques)

Ghost of Tsushima: Legends allows players to co-op in teams of two or four to vanquish corrupted Mongols from Tsushima Island. Like any good co-op focused game, Legends features 4 different classes that players can choose from: The Samurai, The Assassin, The Archer and, The Ronin. Each class comes with its own unique traits to aid others in the heat of combat.

It is imperative that players work as a team if that plan on completing Gold or Nightmare settings. They should be coordinating attacks and keeping quiet when they can. Most importantly, they should be showing up with the tools most helpful to the team as a whole. There’s no class more important to team successes than The Ronin. With the ability to consistently heal their allies, The Ronin is the golden key to victory in Ghost of Tsushima: Legends. This guide will focus on how players can best play The Ronin class for maximum team benefit.

Ghost of Tsushima: Legends – The Ronin

How to Play Ronin Class in Ghost of Tsushima: Legends (Tips, Tricks, & Techniques)

Each class in Ghost of Tsushima: Legends has its own unique Ultimate ability. The Ronin’s Ultimate, Breath of Izanami, will revive fallen allies from anywhere on the map. This is, quite possibly, the best special ability across all four Ghosts. Although it doesn’t do any damage (more on that later) Breath of Izanami WILL save the team during Gold and Nightmare difficulties when even a single Ghost death will fail the mission. All Ghost specials will cost three Resolve. However, there are a few ways players can fire off Breath of Izanami more frequently.

Using Breath of Izanami the Smart Way

As mentioned, Breath of Izanami costs three Resolve. However, there are a few ways players can increase their maximum Resolve to effectively keep five full at all times. The easiest way to increase resolve is simply selecting The Ronin’s ‘Resolve Increase’ perk unlocked at rank 9. While increasing health regen may sound attractive, the extra Resolve slot will prove more useful in tight situations. Remember, The Ronin is there to benefit the team, not the player. This article will go more in-depth with Ronin Techniques later on.

Another way to increase overall Resolve is by re-rolling the perk on the equipped charm. There are a handful of different outcomes, but thankfully players can re-roll their perks as many times as they like. Keep rolling until ‘Increase Maximum Resolve by 1’ is unlocked. Once players alter one aspect of a piece they can ONLY re-roll that aspect. They’ll have to reforge the piece completely to change different perks and properties (buffs). Remember, re-forging and re-rolling will cost Blessings, Honor, and Essence. Players will most likely accumulate lots of Honor and Essence simply by playing the game. Blessings are a little trickier to stock-pile.

Now that players have five Resolve slots, let’s talk about filling them fast. Legendary and Epic pieces of gear will feature two different properties along with a perk. Each property will display a percentage window to the right of the item. This percentage determines how effective that buff will be. Epic Katana’s will feature ‘Melee Resolve Gain’ as a possible outcome. This will buff the rate at which the Resolve meter fills simply by landing melee attacks. It is incredibly useful when trying to fill that final slot in order to launch Breath of Izanami and revive one’s fallen teammates. Simply find a weaker enemy and wail on them until the meter fills. Secondarily, players can also re-roll the properties on their charm to grant them increased Resolve gain in general. They’ll have to rely on a little bit of luck in order to get a charm that not only boosts Resolve gain AND grants an extra Resolve slot, but it is possible.

Now players will have five Resolve slots that fill rather quickly. Coordinate with other Ronin in the party as to who has Breath Izanami ready to pop. It’s a shame when multiple are wasted on one fallen Ghost.

Selecting the Right Techniques

Ghost of Tsushima: Legends simplifies the base game’s technique pool. Each class has its own unique skill tree broken down into Ultimate Ability, Class Ability, and Perks 1-3. Remember that unlocking a new technique doesn’t mean it’s active. Each Ghost only has 1 Ultimate ability. They can then choose between 2 different class abilities and 9 perks. Players will unlock everything by Rank 18 but will have to level up each class individually. The Ronin’s most important aspects are Breath of Izanami and Healing Incense (second class ability). As fun as summoning a spirit dog can be, Healing Incense will better benefit the team.

Between the 9 perks Ronin can choose from, the only ‘must-have’ is Soothing Breath (perk 3). This will fully heal all Ghosts as well as revive any downed teammates when Breath of Izanami is cast. Players don’t even have to wait for another Ghost to go down. If they see their team could use HP they can pop Breath of Izanami. However, it is recommended that players wait for somebody to go down. Strong Oni enemies can down Ghosts in one fatal shot from full health, not to mention pesky archers and Fire Spirits. Other than Soothing Breath, players are free to choose whichever other perks fit their playstyle. However, Increased Resolve is highly recommended for the reasons mentioned above. Finally, Ronin Unleashed (perk 1) will decrease class ability cooldown by 15%. This will allow for Healing Incense to be popped more frequently during combat.

Best Ronin Gear

Most gear in Ghost of Tsushima: Legends is up to player preference. That being said, those playing Ronin will want to keep the team in mind when selecting gear. It’s more about re-rolling for the right perks and properties on those pieces of gear. With the team in mind, Smoke Bombs, Sticky Bombs, and Bomb Packs are going to be the most helpful. Think of Ronin as the explosives expert of the bunch. Smoke will come in handy if a fellow Ghost is in need of a revive and Breath of Izanami isn’t ready yet. Smoke will also disorient enemies and conceal Ghosts allowing for critical strikes and assassinations. Sticky Bombs and Bomb Packs are great for clearing out groups of enemies, especially when they’re crowding around the zone in survival mode. Katanas and Charms are ultimately up to player preference.

Ghost of Tsushima: Legends is all about teamwork and cooperation. Unfortunately, there’s no way to know which classes random teammates will be running. When playing quick-play games, it’s probably safest to run Ronin in case one ends up in a game full of Archers. Every great squad needs a healer.
