“How to Lose a Guy Gardner in 10 Days”: DC’s Iconic Heroes to Star in Rom-Com-Inspired Valentine’s Day Special

Romantic comedies often star a brilliant woman too busy for romance and a laid-back guy trying to win her over: now, DC Comics’ most laid-back louse of a man is getting his due as he headlines DC’s How to Lose a Guy Gardner in 10 Days #1 this coming February. This anthology features eight new stories from top writers and artists about some of the messiest love lives in all of comics.

Referencing classic rom-coms like 50 First Dates, Love Actually, You’ve Got Mail, and, of course, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, the themed one-shot promises to be heartwarming and funny. Other stories include the Flash wooing Iris West and Red Tornado looking for love online. Keep reading for a peek at all the covers as well as the full solicitation from DC Comics.

  • Romance is rarely a simple affair—love is almost always followed by some sort of conflict. Whether you’re Plastic Man twisting yourself into knots trying to please someone, or the Flash traveling back in time to make a catastrophic 50 first dates perfect, or even a lonely robot who just can’t seem to find love unless it’s mail from a computer screen, like Red Tornado, love actually is…a pain in the 27 dresses. So in the grand tradition of these dating conundrums a la rom-coms of the ’90s and ’00s, we are proud to present eight new stories about love and trying to find it in this zany world.

DC Promises Romantic Shenanigans in New Valentine’s Special

Flash spinning around Iris West and kissing her cheek

The solicit promises that this isn’t just an anthology of romance stories, but DC’s own spin on classic romance films, including 50 First Dates starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days starring Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson, You’ve Got Mail starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, and more. Infamous Green Lantern Guy Gardner anchors the special. While Guy has had love interests, he’s not particularly known for being a great boyfriend — just ask Justice League International member Ice.

Amanda Conner’s cover art shows him surrounded by Ice; Kari Limbo, his original girlfriend who almost married Hal Jordan; Power Girl, who he has sexually harassed; and Fire, who has had her share of strange Justice League romances, including Guy. Plastic Man is mentioned and has a few love interests in his past; it’ll be interesting to see who he’s tying himself into knots over. Red Tornado has also been married with children, but readers will have to wait to find out who he’s romancing “from a computer screen.”

DC Comics’ Strongest Power Is Love, Actually

Nightwing and Batgirl on a Gotham rooftop with the Batsignal

Finally, Dustin Nguyen’s variant cover of Batgirl and Nightwing doesn’t provide much of a hint to their story, but has its own levels of romance and comedy baked in: as they share a beautiful rooftop view of Gotham, Batgirl’s hand goes straight for Nightwing’s best asset. Romance has always been a part of comics, but this collection promises to parody well-loved movies in a way DC has never ventured into before. The title alone shows they’re trotting out the perfect characters for these stories in a way that draws on the rich history of DC Comics and its multiverse.
