One huge aspect of Baldur’s Gate 3 that is almost as enjoyable as playing through the main storyline is accruing companions, some of which include pets such as a dog, an owlbear, and even a Brain. Players will initially encounter the Brain, also referred to as “Us” or an intellect devourer, in the opening of Baldur’s Gate 3.
In fact, it is likely the first companion players will encounter, even before any of their party members. Unfortunately, this initial Us companion will not remain with you as it is just a temporary companion, however, the party will have an encounter later on that will allow them another opportunity to recruit Us.
How To Summon The Us Companion
After completing the core of Act 2, which involves defeating Ketheric Thorm at Moonrise Towers. Once that is done, jump down into the hole that will be presented and the party should find themselves in a Mindflayer Colony lying below the tower. While down here, hunt for a Bugbear named Chop. He’s holding an Intellect Devourer hostage, and you have two options on how to proceed. The party can either attempt to convince him to release his hostage or they may simply kill Chop and take the key to free the creature themselves.
Upon being freed, the Intellect Devourer will hand over an item, Summon Us. The Summon Us item does precisely what its name entails. Since the Intellect Devourer believes that the two of you would work better together, it has gifted you the ability to summon it whenever you wish.
Once summoned, it will serve a similar purpose to that of a pet summoned using the Find Familiar spell in Baldur’s Gate 3. It will work as a companion to the party that will engage in battles and be of some assistance.
Though Us is not necessarily a strong addition to the party, it never hurts to have a helping hand when dealing with some of the more difficult combat in Baldur’s Gate 3. It will be directly attached to the character that has summoned it, so keep that in mind, especially if playing in multiplayer.
One of the primary uses that may come in handy to players is that the Us companion has the Small trait, allowing it to interact with holes that the rest of the Baldur’s Gate 3 party is likely too big to utilize.
