How to Find (& Catch) a Shiny Drifloon in Pokémon Sword & Shield

Drifloon is known to cause children to vanish and has made an appearance in Pokemon Sword & Shield. This guide will help players find their very own Shiny Drifloon. This Pokemon has a strange and mysterious backstory. As it originates from the Sinnoh region of Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, several reports state that this Pokemon will drag children away into the afterlife. Its balloon-like design is used to lure children in. Once a child grabs on to one of its strings, it will fly away with the child. Incredibly morbid for a game made for small children but also very interesting. Drifloon is one of the few Pokemon that return to the Galar region from previous entries. This is the first time in the series where a mainline title is unable to hold every Pokemon in existence. Previously, trainers were able to transfer their favorite Pokemon from the previous generations to the new one. Now, only a select few Pokemon are allowed a visa into the Galar region, as their code is not available in the title. Drifloon is one of the very few from the Sinnoh region (likely due to a potential Pokemon Diamond and Pearl remake in development). Here’s how players can find their very own child snatcher, Shiny Drifloon, in Pokemon Sword & Shield.

Breeding is the best way to go about capturing a Shiny Drifloon. Considering this is the first stage of its evolutionary line, it will be much easier to find it versus hunting for it in the wild or by participating in Max Raid battles. There are a few things players need to accomplish when Shiny hunting Pokemon. These range from understanding the methods of how Shiny hunting works and what items will increase their chances of locating one, regardless of its through the breeding or the battling. While it isn’t necessary, these are here to make it much easier to encounter these elusive Shiny creatures.

  • The Oval Charm: Makes it easier for eggs to appear while a Pokemon is in the Day Care. The player must be the Champion. Head to Circhester and enter the building right next to the Pokemon Center. Inside will be a trainer who will only battle the player after they become champion. Defeat him, and he will award the player with the Oval Charm.
  • Flame Body: Makes eggs hatch faster. There’s currently 7 Pokemon in Pokemon Sword and Shield with this ability. Those Pokemon are Litwick, Lampent, Chandelure, Carkol, Coalossal, Sizzilipede, and Centiscorch. Carkol is the easiest to get in this group, as players can find them spawning in the Galar Mine. Once players have a Carkol with Flame Body, eggs will hatch much faster.
  • Regional Ditto: Increases the chance of running into a Shiny egg. To obtain one of these, the player will likely have to trade with a trainer from another region. If the player has Pokemon Home, they can search for one using the GTS. Breeding with this Ditto and another Pokemon will increase the odds of the egg being shiny.
  • Shiny Charm: This item brings the odds from 1/4096 to 1/1365.33. To get this item, the player will need to have completed their Pokedex in the game, meaning capturing and registering all 400 Pokemon in the game. After doing this, head over to Circhster and enter the building with the flags on the outside. Go in the elevator and head to the room on the far left. Speak with the doctor in this room and he will give the player the Shiny Charm.

Once the player has all of these, now it’s just a game of chance. Here’s how players can find a Shiny Drifloon.

How to Find (& Catch) a Shiny Drifloon in Pokémon Sword & Shield

The best way to find a Shiny Drifloon in Pokemon Sword & Shield is to breed for it. If the player has collected all the above items, the Shiny Drifloon will appear in an egg. For starters, place the Regional Ditto and a Drifloon or Drifblim in one of the Day Care Centers in the Galar region. This will cause these two Pokemon to breed. The Regional Ditto along with the Shiny Charm will increase the chances of the offspring becoming a Shiny Pokemon. Make sure to ride around with a Pokemon with Flame Body to make the eggs hatch faster. Speak with the Day Care Lady and she will provide the trainer with an egg. Repeat this process over and over again until the egg hatches into a Shiny Drifloon. This is a time-consuming process so be prepared to wait a long time before the Shiny appears.

The Pokemon series is full of over 80o+ total Pokemon, each with their own identities and backgrounds. While Drifloon’s is a bit terrifying, there are plenty of other weird and scary Pokedex entries in the series. For example, if the trainer looks in the hole behind a Shedinja, they will lose their souls. The Pokemon series is full of dark and gritty moments like these and that’s what makes capturing all of these creatures so interesting. Pokemon Sword & Shield is also the first in the series to receive paid DLC. The Isle of Armor and The Crown Tundra mark a new beginning for the series moving forward. The Isle of Armor recently released this June and provided a new wild area full of over 100 older Pokemon from previous generations. Players could spend most of their time encountering all of these new creatures to the Galar region, or focus on the new story scenario, where the player must complete the trials of Master Mustard and partner with a legendary Pokemon along the way. The Crown Tundra is still surrounded in mystery, but it will also feature an additional 100 of some of the most classic Pokemon, new legendary Pokemon, and Galarian forms, as well as a new story separate from the Isle of Armor and the mainland. Regardless, this just gives the player more of an opportunity to capture more of these Shiny Pokemon. Shiny Pokemon are out there waiting to be captured in both of these DLCs.

Pokemon Sword & Shield is available now on Nintendo Switch.
