Audible is the most well-known platform for audiobooks — but that’s not to say the Amazon-owned site is perfect. Subscribers may find themselves wanting to cancel their Audible membership for many reasons, and when that time comes, figuring out how to do so can be a little tricky.

Audible first got started back in the late 1990s, was purchased by Amazon in 2008, and has grown to become the market leader for audiobooks in the years since. While users can buy individual titles without a recurring fee, audiobooks are sold for their full retail price with this approach. With one of Audible’s various plans, though, users get a certain amount of free books every month included with their membership. This is the best way to use Audible and, for folks that listen to a lot of audiobooks, it’s one of the best deals out there. The Audible Premium Plus plan, for example, starts at $14.95/month for unlimited access to thousands of titles and one free credit to own any other title not included in that collection.

However, that may not be enough to keep some people paying a monthly fee. Whether because times have gotten tough, someone doesn’t use Audible enough to justify the cost, or anything else in between, there are plenty of reasons why someone would want to cancel their membership. To do so, Audible says to hop on a desktop computer and visit the Audible website. After logging into the account, move the mouse over the text at the top of the screen that says ‘Hi, [Name].’ This should reveal a drop-down menu with a few different options. On this drop-down, click ‘Account Details.’ Click ‘Cancel membership’ under the ‘Your membership’ section and then keep clicking ‘Continue canceling’ on the next few pages to confirm the decision. On the last page, click ‘Finish canceling’ to complete the job. Once Audible shows a message that says, ‘We’re sorry to see you go,’ rest assured that the cancellation has been completed.

What Happens When You Cancel An Audible Membership

How To Cancel Audible Membership

After canceling an Audible membership, there are a few things to keep in mind. For starters, members retain access to their membership up until the date of their next billing cycle. If someone cancels their plan on June 4, but the next billing date isn’t until June 20, they’ll get to keep using their membership like normal until June 20 rolls around. Once the billing date comes up and the membership is officially ended, access to the Plus Catalog is revoked. This is the library of free titles all Audible members have access to, but once a membership is canceled, it’s no longer available to use.

However, the good news is that titles people have purchased using their free monthly credits are still available to listen to just like normal. Per the Audible website, “You have acquired lifelong listening rights with the purchase of an Audible title. As long as you don’t return or delete the titles, they will stay in your library.”
