How to Beat The Elder Dragon Alatreon in Monster Hunter World

Monster Hunter World provides an expansive universe of beasts to slay and loot to collect. The most notorious among them is the Elder Dragon Alatreon. This guide will explain the best methods of defeating him.

Monster Hunter World was launched in January 2018 by Capcom and it is a massive action role-playing game that enables players to explore an open-world either trapping or killing monsters. Players can freely create their own character and customarily build them as they best see fit. The main differences in how characters are forged rely solely on their weapon type; bows, hammers, swords, etc. Different move sets and animations come with these weapons and they can either be enhanced or impeded on with the various armor and item combinations. The custom made character works for the ‘Research Commission’ and their mission is to protect this company from potentially threatening monsters as well as capturing them for study. Players will explore the ‘New World’ that was found at the outer rims of a base camp known as Astera that is populated with sundry new beasts to find. The entire area is broken up into six distinct regions that seamlessly blend together in which players can go on expeditions on a whim. Thusly, the number of items and customizable options that come with the characters can be near endless, given the generous amount of loot to collect.

The core idea with Monster Hunter World’s gameplay is based on slaying or trapping monsters and collecting loot. With certain parts of the monsters, players can craft different items and garb that gives them new attributes. Players can go completely solo or co-op with up to 4 players. Each monster has its own personality and can become highly aggressive when provoked and things can get pretty hairy. Therefore, there will be required assistance with either other players or a ‘Palico’ that can help out in combat. With such a robust selection of monsters to research, the heart of the overall story is studying different Elder Dragons that have the ability to manipulate entire ecosystems. The story in Monster Hunter World can go up to 50 hours and players will be encountering a variety of Elder Dragons as the plot unravels. There are quite a few story missions to complete and once they’re done, there’s still plenty to do and explore through the vast regions in Monster Hunter World.

How to Beat The Elder Dragon Alatreon in Monster Hunter World

Naturally, taking on a dragon is no easy feat. Through common lore, dragons tend to be large fire-breathing beings that tend to have a nasty attitude toward humans. When it comes to Monster Hunter World, the Elder Dragons come with all manners of tricks up their scaley sleeves. With Alatreon, this Elder Dragon has the ability to switch between different elemental powers on the fly. Therefore, locking down on an attack pattern can be very difficult. There will be fire, water, ice, and thunder elements associated with Alatreon and its attacks. Hence, being properly prepared with elemental weapons that’ll counter all of these strikes is ideal. Luckily, Alatreon’s horns, tail, forearms, and wings are breakable and should be focused on during the battle.

To start, keep running around the dragon and strike its hind legs and belly. It’ll thrash around while this is happening and sometimes it’ll leap back and launch a fire attack. It’ll aim at its previous position and it will charge up before launching the fiery projectile so, watch for its animation before it spews out. Fire and dragon-based attacks will be the norm while it’s on the ground. However, once it goes up in the air, it’ll switch to thunder and ice attacks. Just use common sense to counter its elemental attacks. When it uses fire attacks, use ice-based attacks, etc. Keep an eye on Alatreon’s horns as they will give hints on what types of attacks that it is about to unleash. Also, NPCs will also give clues on what Alatreon is about to do. So, heed their warnings when they give them. Its horns are the center point with its elemental powers and breaking them will severely weaken it.

When this happens,  it’ll no longer be able to use the fire and ice attacks. This will be a major step-up for the player. It is advised to equip the; Immunity Mantle, Astero Jerky, and Potions to help survive the fight. The main crutch that Alatreon has that is giving players a hard time is a Supernova Skill called, “Escaton Judgment”. This will obliterate players with just one hit and it can be near impossible to dodge. Now, the best way to avoid this is to weaken Alatreon as soon as possible by breaking down its main weak points. In turn, this will render the “Escaton Judgment” attack to become weaker. It will become easier to dodge and will provide a small window of time to heal. Going solo is possible and beating this Elder Dragon is possible, but it’s advised to take it on with a team.

With that said, everyone on the team should each have a different elemental weapon handy to counter everything Alatreon dishes out. Players should keep their eyes peeled and focus on all the visual clues Alatreon provides. Try to be prepared to avoid whatever comes from its elemental attacks. Just keep fighting strategically and don’t forget to stock up on items that grant life. With a little patience and a proper loadout, this Elder Dragon will fall and its loot will be available for the taking.
