How The Defenders & Avengers Could Crossover

The stars of The Defenders want to crossover with the Avengers, but they think the big screen heroes should come to Netflix. When Marvel first began weaving their cinematic narrative together into one universe, it was a pioneering new step in blockbuster filmmaking. After culminating in the first Avengers, film, the MCU took another step forward by extending their world to TV with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Since then, Netflix has expanded things further with the various heroes who will come together next month for The Defenders. Sadly, we’ve seen very little to prove that the TV and movie universes really are connected. While each show has referenced the movies to some degree, the films haven’t made a single effort to return the favor. Still, fans have long hoped to see something akin to a crossover between the Avengers and the Defenders. Given that each of the street-level heroes brings something to the table, the big guns could certainly use their help. For the stars of The Defenders, however, they think the titans should come to them.

GamesRadar has posted an interview with Finn Jones and Mike Colter as part of the site’s SFX Magazine cover story on The Defenders that dropped today. When the subject of a crossover came up, Iron Fist star Jones had his own idea for how the two teams should come together.

“We’re part of the same universe. If there ever was a mash-up between the Avengers and the Defenders, I think it’d be really nice to see the Avengers come to the Netflix world. It’d be way more interesting to see those characters fleshed out the same way as our characters are, rather than just see our characters do some big f-cking fight scene! There’s nothing cool about that.”

As Jones points out, the Netflix series are able to spend a lot more time focusing on character. And while fans would likely disagree that there would be nothing cool about Daredevil and company joining a massive movie battle, it would be nice to see some of the Avengers have to react to street-level threats. Luke Cage star Colter echoed Jones’ sentiments

“It would be easier to have them come into our world because it would probably be more believable. There’s not some huge universal thing going on, some intergalactic thing invading the planet or something like that. Stark’s up in the tower…”

While Stark could certainly come down to play, characters like Spider-Man and Captain America could easily fight on a smaller scale. Even more likely, however, are Black Widow and Hawkeye, who share a lot in common with the Defenders. Of course, while Jones and Colter would love to see the Avengers come to their neighborhood, they’re not opposed to joining the big leagues.

“Get ’em to Harlem. How good would that be, seeing Tony Stark in Harlem? That’s f-cking brilliant! Although it would be cool to see Luke Cage in a different universe, fighting off some dark overlord. That’d be cool. Luke Cage and Iron Fist in space!”

With The Defenders heading to Comic-Con this week and the show premiering next month, we’ll get a better idea of how things fit into the MCU soon enough. As for whether the heroes will appear in a movie, we might have to wait a bit longer to find out.
