How Strong Bruce Willis’ Overseer Is Compared To James McAvoy’s The Beast In Glass

Glass is the final installment in M. Night Shyamalan’s Eastrail 177 trilogy, and it sees the characters introduced in Unbreakable and Split colliding — with James McAvoy’s Beast and Bruce Willis’ Overseer even fighting at the beginning of the film. Unfortunately, both are captured and brought to Raven Hill Memorial Psychiatric Hospital, so viewers never learn whether Willis’ character or McAvoy’s would have won this showdown. They seem to be evenly matched for a while, and it’s clear they both have different sets of strengths.

Both the Beast and the Overseer are stronger than the average person, and it’s much harder to kill them. The Beast proves this in Split, when even Casey’s bullets don’t stop him. And the Overseer can lift hundreds of pounds, move in extraordinary ways, and take far more damage than should be possible — though trauma surrounding water slows him down. It’s hard to say whether the Overseer or Beast is more powerful in terms of physical strength, but Glass and its predecessors offer some clues about who would win their fight.

How Strong The Beast Is

The Beast escapes in Glass

The Beast is Kevin Wendell Crumb’s 24th personality, and he boasts strength and abilities the others simply don’t possess. In Split and Glass, the Beast proves he’s capable of flipping cars and scaling walls with nothing but his own physical strength. It seems as though there’s an adrenaline component to this, as Kevin’s more aggressive personalities tend to emerge in times of high stress. There’s seemingly no scientific reason he’s able to bend metal bars or survive bullets, though Dr. Staple does admit that superhumans exist at the ending of Glass.

The Beast’s impressive physical powers give him an advantage against his enemies, and they certainly make it easier for him to terrorize those weaker than him. Of course, the fact that the Beast doesn’t always “hold the light” presents a weak spot. It doesn’t seem like Kevin has much control over when his various personalities emerge, and that could be used against him. But when the Horde does take the form of the Beast, he’s nearly invincible, incredibly fast, and physically strong.

How Strong The Overseer Is

David Dunn as Overseer standing in the rain in Unbreakable

Willis’ Overseer is introduced in Unbreakable, with David Dunn’s extraordinary abilities and alterego emerging on the heels of a train crash. Following the accident, Dunn is capable of seeing what other people have done or are planning to do by simply making contact with them. He also gains impressive physical abilities, which make him invulnerable to disease and injury. Dunn’s Overseer can lift an impossible amount of weight, though his fighting skills are called into question throughout Shyamalan’s trilogy. This is especially true when he’s pitted against the Beast, who might match him in terms of strength.

The Overseer’s main weakness is water, the result of him nearly drowning when he was younger. With water being so readily available in most situations, this does put him at a significant disadvantage. The Overseer also has more trouble fighting other superhumans than ordinary criminals. This is evident during his initial fight with the Beast, as well as during Glass’ final confrontation, during which he attempts to stop the Beast and Mr. Glass from escaping Raven Hill Memorial.

Is The Overseer Or The Beast Stronger In Glass?

With neither of the fights between the Overseer and the Beast getting true resolutions, it’s hard to determine who’s the more powerful of Shyamalan’s superhumans. However, the Beast does seem like the stronger contender. While the Overseer possesses great physical prowess, he doesn’t always utilize it to the best of his abilities — even after all the practice he gets following Unbreakable. By contrast, The Beast has a raw power that seems to carry him through fights. His instincts appear to be better than Dunn’s, and they’re basically matched in terms of strength. Kevin likely would have won if the two hadn’t been interrupted in Glass.
