Castlevania: Nocturne, a spinoff of Netflix’s four-season long Castlevania anime, stars newcomer Richter Belmont — but how is he related to Trevor and the Belmont clan? Although the game series has featured a wide variety of Belmonts, the anime has only focused on Trevor Belmont, one of the earlier members of the clan. The Castlevania series has been notorious for retconning the Belmont family tree, yet it is not too hard to figure out how Richter Belmont will be related to Trevor in Castlevania: Nocturne.
Originating on the Famicom in 1986, Castlevania is a long-running series of Metroidvania video games that typically chronicle various members of the Belmont clan hunting vampires. The series has mostly stuck to games, but Netflix released an anime adaptation in 2017, which lasted four seasons and was met with critical acclaim. The series follows the trio of Trevor Belmont, Sypha, and Alucard as they attempt to put an end to Dracula, among other quests. Although the original series has concluded, Castlevania: Nocturne will continue the Belmont legacy, this time following Richter Belmont in the times of the French Revolution.
Castlevania has two different Belmont lineages: the one from the original series, and the simplified one from Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, a 2010 reboot of the series. The anime doesn’t reveal many specifics about Trevor’s family history, so it is impossible to pin down the exact number of generations between Trevor and Richter. However, there are some clues. Firstly, Castlevania: Nocturne will take place in the French Revolution, which is over 300 years after the original series is set. Furthermore, Richter is always a direct descendent of Trevor, meaning that Trevor is Richter’s forefather from several generations ago. Castlevania season 4’s ending reveals that, much like in the games, Sypha is pregnant with Trevor’s child. Due to these facts, as well as Richter not yet appearing in the Lords of Shadow timeline, Richter’s family tree will presumably be the same as the original timeline’s.
Belmont Family Tree Explained
It is known that Richter is a distant grandchild of Trevor, but finding out exactly how far apart they are requires breaking down Castlevania‘s complicated Belmont family tree. According to the original timeline, the Belmont family tree goes as so: Richter is the son of Juste Belmont, who is the grandson of Castlevania protagonist Simon Belmont. Simon is the great-grandson of Christopher Belmont, although it is unknown if this is through Soleil or Gerhart Belmont. Christopher is the son of Frediric Belmont, who is the child of Trevor Belmont and Sypha Belnades. This places Richter nine generations after Trevor, which matches up with the time period that the Castlevania sequel series will take place in. Lords of Shadow‘s family tree simplifies the Belmont clan, making Simon the son of Trevor. Although it is possible Castlevania: Nocturne could draw from this timeline, they would have to make significant changes in order for Richter to have been born during the times of the French Revolution.
Castlevania‘s complicated timeline spans over 30 main games, and with all of the retcons the series has gone through, it is likely that Nocturne will make some changes to Richter’s lineage. However, the aforementioned explanation covers how Richter is related to Trevor in the mainline game series, which Nocturne could simply adapt as well. Either way, Castlevania: Nocturne‘s protagonist, Richter Belmont, will be a descendant of Trevor, being born about 300 years after the original Castlevania anime.
