The upcoming Shadows of Rose DLC for Resident Evil Village could be setting up heroine Rose Winters as the protagonist of Resident Evil 9. The latest installment in the classic survival horror series sees protagonist Ethan Winters journey to a small European village in search of his missing daughter. What results is a heart-pounding experience where players fight off hordes of werewolves, seductive vampires, and even more unspeakable horrors. The Resident Evil Village DLC Shadows of Rose will explore the aftermath of Ethan’s European adventure, and it will likely plant the seeds of Resident Evil 9 too.
Resident Evil Village served as a direct successor to the beloved Resident Evil 7: Biohazard while also borrowing elements from the classic shooter Resident Evil 4. 2017’s Resident Evil 7 served as a return to form for the long-running franchise, with the title abandoning international espionage and worldwide zombie outbreaks in favor of a secluded setting and an emphasis on horror. Despite using a first-person perspective like its predecessor, Resident Evil Village puts much more emphasis on combat by reintroducing mechanics like melee attacks and a vendor that sells weapons and ammunition. Resident Evil Village features a chainsaw tank, for example, which demonstrates its much greater focus on action compared to the more subdued Resident Evil 7.
While Shadows of Rose will build upon Resident Evil Village, it will apparently deliver a much different experience. The upcoming expansion is set to take place many years after Village, with Ethan’s infant daughter Rose now serving as a 16-year-old playable hero. The DLC will bring players back to the main game’s European setting, though it presents a twisted version of the location based on Rose’s dark memories. Rose has also been established to possess supernatural powers, which will apparently play a prominent role in Shadows of Rose and its survival horror gameplay. The expansion will be played in third-person, rather than first-person, and according to developers the difficulty in the Shadows of Rose DLC will be much harder than the base game.
Resident Evil 9 Can Star A Depowered Rose Winters
Based on the changes being introduced with Shadows of Rose, it seems likely that Resident Evil 9 will bring back the young heroine as a playable hero. The upcoming Resident Evil Village expansion will take Rose on a third-person adventure through her own mind, with the apparent goal of removing her powers and the fungal Mold infection. The events of Shadows of Rose may leave Rose as a normal human, which would let her serve as a more typical protagonist in Resident Evil 9. This ninth entry in the series could follow up Village’s ending by taking Rose on an international adventure, paying homage to Resident Evil 6 just as Resident Evil Village borrowed from Resident Evil 4.
While the story of Resident Evil 9 is a complete mystery, the title is likely to be a direct follow-up to Resident Evil Village. If Rose is meant to follow her father Ethan as the franchise’s next protagonist, Shadows of Rose could be setting up this scenario by removing her supernatural powers. This would then let Resident Evil 9 follow the loose ends left by Resident Evil Village, which involves government conspiracies and international intrigue.
