How Rachel Zegler’s Live-Action Snow White Costume Compares To Animation

The latest Disney classic to get the live-action treatment is Snow White, starring Rachel Zegler, and the first look at her costume has been released – but how does it compare to that of Disney’s animated classic? One trend that continues to gain force in the film industry is live-action versions of animated movies, and Disney has taken full advantage of it by bringing some of its animated classics to life, though not always successfully. After the success of Cruella, Disney is focusing again on its princesses with the live-action version of the movie that started it all: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

Based on the fairytale by the Brothers Grimm, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was released in 1937 and was not only the first Disney animated movie but also the first full-length traditionally animated feature film, so it holds an important place in film history. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is now a classic of not only Disney but cinema in general and is the most famous adaptation of the Brothers Grimm’s tale. Now, after many live-action versions of the original tale from different studios, Disney is joining the list with a live-action adaptation of its animated version, with Marc Webb serving as director, Greta Gerwig and Erin Cressida Wilson in charge of the screenplay, Gal Gadot playing the Evil Queen, and Rachel Zegler as the title character.

Just like the animated version, Snow White will be a musical, and after a couple of delays due to the coronavirus pandemic, it finally started filming in March 2022. Although no official images have been released yet, set photos showing Zegler’s Snow White costume have now been shared online, revealing she will have a look very close to that of the animated movie. Zegler’s Snow White costume has the same vibrant color palette as the animated version, with blue, white, yellow, and red, and the silhouette of the dress is pretty much the same, with a long, flowing skirt, puffy sleeves, square neckline, and the classic white collar.

Smaller details like the red parts on the sleeve are also present in Zegler’s Snow White costume, but there are also many other small details that are different. Zegler’s costume has a red seam on the upper part of the dress, including the white collar, the front part is like a corset and can be adjusted, and Zegler’s dress seems to have a thin, blue belt with a buckle with a special design, which might be linked to Snow White’s family, somehow. The biggest difference with the animated version of Snow White is that Zegler’s costume has long, blue sleeves, while the animated one only had short, puffy sleeves. As for the rest of Zegler’s Snow White look, the photos show her in-between scenes, so her hair isn’t ready, yet the cut is also reminiscent of the one in the animated movie, as well as her makeup, with Snow White’s characteristic red lips.

It’s worth noting, however, that Zegler’s Snow White dress might not look as bright in the movie due to how colors translate to the camera and the filters and light production might use, so even though it looks costume-ish in those set photos, the final product will most likely look different. Still, the costume for the Snow White live-action version is very loyal to that of the animated classic, which will surely help the project catch the attention of those who are especially fond of Disney’s animated movie.
