Disney CEO Bob Iger explains how Moana 2 became a feature-length animated movie out of the planned Disney+ show. Following the critical and commercial success of Moana in 2016, a follow-up Disney+ show was announced in December 2020, and a live-action adaptation movie was also said to be on the way, making the announcement of the animated sequel and its November 2024 release all the more surprising.
During a recent Disney earnings call (via TheWrap), Iger explained how he and other studio executive decided that the Moana Disney+ show should become the sequel that will be released in theaters later this year. Read Iger’s response below:
We were impressed with what we saw, and we knew it deserved a theatrical release. The original Moana film from 2016 recently crossed 1 billion hours streamed on Disney+ and was the most-streamed movie of 2023 on any platform in the U.S.
