How Many Seasons Will Invincible Run? Robert Kirkman Knows How Many He’d Like It To

Invincible creator Robert Kirkman is ready to see the show run for a long while. An adaptation of the comic series by Kirman, Cory Walker, and Ryan Ottley, the show is an animated adventure featuring the young superhero first learning to use his powers. After discovering his destiny as a superhero, Invincible is forced to face off against aliens, government entities, and even his own father. Season 1 concluded in 2021, and season 2 is set for a November 3 release.

After the Invincible season 2 premiere, the future of the show depends on its continuing success. While there is no guarantee that it will see any future seasons, Kirkman spoke to Polygon about how many he would like to see it run for. In the hopes of fully adapting the comic, he would love to see around seven or eight seasons, though he expects that could change. Check out his full quote below:

I’m trying not to pin it down to a number, because it is somewhat of a moving target. I think in the seven-to-eight-season range seems like it would be enough. But there could be some things we move through a little faster, some things we expand. If we’re fortunate enough to go for a good long time, I think that would be enough to cover the entire comic. And there are some things along the way that didn’t get into the comic that I’d like to do. I think it’d be cool to have some episodes here and there that are completely original. So that’s part of the plan moving forward.

The Future Of Invincible

The immediate future of Invincible lies in season 2. After the ending of season 1 saw Omni-Man retreat to space after nearly beating his son to death. Omni-Man will have to face Viltrumite justice after abandoning his post and leaving the Earth unconquered. Invincible will also need to play a larger role as Earth’s protector, after the Guardians of the Globe were wiped out. There is no one left to protect the Earth but he and his fellow young heroes.

The high stakes should make for an exciting season, but the long delay between seasons could be a problem for Prime Video. If the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes continue through November 3, the cast will be unable to promote the coming episodes. Marketing will be much more difficult, and the two-year-long gap between seasons could become a bigger problem.

If the show survives these issues, it should be able to achieve the resounding success of season 1. Eight seasons is a long run for any animated series, but it could very well achieve it. Invincible’s struggle with his father is a compelling enough narrative to drive multiple seasons of content. If Invincible season 2 is as good as season 1, Kirkman may very well achieve his dream of fully adapting the comic.
